I wish Ford went through with the plans for a diesel engine for the F-150... 4.5L V8 DOHC 32 Valve Turbodiesel engine with 260HP and 355 ft-lbs of torque while delivering 25+ mpg according to test results. Now that would have been the very best diesel truck in the USA auto market.

I have a 04.5 Dodge 2500 with the cummins and the nv5600 6 speed manual, that is the absolutely most reliable powertrain in my own opinion but as far as the truck i look at it this way, I bought a CUmmins and they gave me a free dodge. But if u might be interested ina new dodge stop on over at turbodieselregister.com and check out the 3rd generation forums I am a member it is truely the most unbiased diesel truck forum on the net in my opinion, u can see the amzing power of some of the guys trucks and also the durability but in the end go withwhat u like. your money.

My point is if you don't need the power for towing especially at altitude, you won't recoup the additional upfront cost of the diesel option, so other than BOMB'ing fun or running BioD/WVO, there is no real reason... Figure it is a $4-6k option depending on configuration.

The Dodge truck is junk, personaly I prefer a Ford. But the Cummins is sweet and at least for me that would sell it.
I think a Dodge 2500 4x4 with a 6 speed and a regular cab would make a great start. Throw on a 6in exhuast some computer work and a massive turbo and have fun!

now just why do you say
a dodge truck is junk?
i have an 03 cummins six speed with 45k. lets see. i have had four problems. first i had a tire that went down over about 4 months...would lose 3 or 4 pounds of air. not warrented. second i had some leaks around some plugs in the head of the engine. warrented. third i had a spontanious crack in the windshield. not warrented. fourth i have a problem with the ac that causes it to ice the evap on a very hot humid day. i havent asked them to fix it yet so it prob wont be warrented (36k). also the factory shocks were JUNK and after three years of looking and waitning i got some very excellent rancho nine way adjustables...absoultely transformed the truck. what is there there that would be better or warrented on a ford or chebby? this truck gets worked pretty hard about 2/3 of the time. just got back from a 3k mile trip pulling my 9000# travel trailer. so is a ford or chebby better? i dont know about the new ones but i have owned six chebby sububans and one (never again) ford. the chebbys are maybe eaual to the dodge except for the drivetrain which is pretty sad in my experience (compared to the dodge with cummins and six speed). i also had a durango (bought new) with a 360 magnum. it was ok. tranny was suspect. sold it with 40k on it. so again, i ask why do you think dodges are junk? tom w

Yeah, to say the Dodge is junk is a bit ignorant.
Again, all three have problems. We're not talking Toyota here folks.

Ok lets put it this way, Dodge trucks are not built to the same quality level as Fords or even GM's. Dodge uses cheap interior materials that and are very poorly designed. The quality of materials under the hood and underneath are also not up to par.
However Toyota beats them all, to bad you can't get a diesel. My unlce used to be a big Ford guy and bought a new F150 every year or so. 03 was the last year he actually wrote Ford a letter complaining about all the little areas they cut cost on. For example they deleted the remote oil filter and the door pockets. Now he drives a Toyota, and is happy with it except Toyota cheaped out and put drums in the back insted of discs. I have been around lots of Dodge's, they are a nice looking truck but I'd never buy one. I prefer Fords still.

Rumor has it Toyota will in the next few years.
If they can produce a one ton dually with a decent diesel powertrain, the big three can kiss their collective full sized PU truck dominance goodbye. Toyota is set to produce more vehicles this year than any other manufacturer. They, along with Honda are the most profitable.
