What is this (76 300d)
Hello,
I purchased this 76 300D from a guy who had taken off the head. Since this is my first rebuild and I didn't tear this one apart I don't know what this part is. I'm guessing something to do with the timing chain, I almost have the car back together. Just got the head and cam and rocker arms on yesterday, and put back the exhaust, etc today. I'm almost there but want to figure out what that part is for before I get to far. Timing the IP is my last big obstacle. If you have any pointers for that I'll take them as well. I've been reading off of the manual but isn't always easy to read. Thank you very much, Jason |

Looks like a guide wheel to me. Certainly part of the timing chain components.

Hmmmm
Well I took a quick peek at the website you sent me. Nothing there realy, not sure if it loaded right. I will look at fastlane though and see what I can find that resembles it.
All I hope is that it is not to late now that I have the head on. I would just have to kick myself. |

intermediate Gear?
I looked and it looks like what it calls an intermediate gear. Can anyone confirm that is what it is. Then if it is that.......What is it? Again I've never put one of these together and didn't have the luck to tear this one apart. After looking down there a long while I could not find a home for it so I put the head on.
Thank you for any help you can offer, Jason |

He's putting the engine together as we speak and hopefully going to have it running soon!
I stopped by on my way home from worked and helped as much as I could before it got cold. He should start a thread...after all he has two w115 bodies now...both project cars and very interesting! |

I love the 115...if only they made a turbo.
From my experience with my 75 240D I can tell you that driving the 115 body is an absolute dream. On really fast corners the car just kind of hunkers down and stays tight on all four wheels. None of the body roll that you feel in the 123s or 126s.
I know the 75 body pretty well so if he needs any insight he can give me a ring over here in Bend. Good luck.

Road Trip
Well maybe if I get this beast running I'll have to make a road trip over there.
Tried starting it last night to no avail. Could be a million different things wrong with it considering I put it together myself, but hopefully nothing major. I'm assuming it is the IP timing and hopefully can adjust it enough with out taking it off. If not I guess it is comming off. But that shouldn't be as daunting as a task as it was to put the head back together and bolt everything back on. I'm getting fuel to the lines and the glow plugs are working so I know that isn't the problemo. What really scares me is that it appears there is exahust comming out the front of the head. That scares me quite a bit. I'm assuming that is where it is comming out, but I can't crank and look at the same time. I wonder if that is the case if it could be a compression issue. But who knows. Luckily I have Brandon to help me out and come over and diagnose. I think I might run down there tonight and get a drip pipe from him so I can start this thing or get to town taking off and adjusting the IP. I can't wait to get this thing on the road and start working on all the small things. Look forward to driving to bend. Jason PS. Wouldn't happen to know of a good crank for my 74 240D would you? |

crank

The auction is for a head, but he mentions he has the short block to sell also. Email him and see if he will part with the crank separately. Glenn |

Shipping would be ungodly...wouldn't it?

shipping depends....
When I was pricing used engines for my 240D some companies could sell me an engine for $800 shipped with a 90 day warranty. Others charged $300 to $500 just to ship in addition to the cost of the engine. I guess you have to shop around.
