Adding turbo to NA 300D
In Australia, the 300D did not come as a Turbocharged engine. There are no sources of the turbo in australia. Aftermarket kits for this engine are not available here either.
I would like more power for towing. I understand that there are issues with adding a turbo to the RHD 300Ds, where it fouls the PS box. I understand the risks associated with overfuelling/ melting pistons, etc, with adding a turbo to a NA 300D. I only wish to add around 7 psi of boost and a little more fuel. Is anyone prepared to send me a set of manifolds and a turbo so that I can investigate the means of adding a turbo to my 300D? I plan to document the process and link it here for others to review.

I've got a rebuildable turbo (Garrett) I would donate. No manifolds though. Consider a turbo injection pump, that would make it easy with an ALDA.

How are you going to deal with the steering box problem? Are you familiar with the company in the UK that does this? I've posted the link here a number of time. They are pricey but as I recall they have some pictures of the 300d conversions on their website (at least they used to). I'm guessing you'll need a different manifold than the ones for LHD.

You could always make your own manifolds. Thats what Ive been doing for my 240D. There is one place in Aus that I know of that has, or used to have when I last visited, 2 factory Turbo OM617's. One was installed in a G-Wagen. PM me if you after the contact details, they are located in Salt Ash, NSW
One other thing, I'm not sure if your cars have a heat shield around the rubber flexijoint on the steering box input shaft. At any rate I dont think your converted 280E would. It's probably a good idea to install one since the exhaust will run quite close to it when you install the turbo. I took the shielding off my donor 240D, to put in my 280CE the mouldings for the screws were already there, I just had to drill a small hole. |
