I'm new and need some advice.
Hello Fellow Diesel Junkies!! I'm new to the forum and I had a question. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Right now I am the proud owner of an 83' 240d and 81 300sd. If anybody is interested in the 300 give me a call. $500 and you can have it. I live in the panhandle of Florida. Anyways, I have a buddy that works at a Benz dealership and he came accross a 1996 E300D with 69k miles. Only problem is that the check engine light is on and it says "Engine Electrical" I drove it and its drives great. Not a scratch on the whole car. I am kind of skeptical, because one would think why dont they just fix it there and resell it. My buddies answer was that they dont like anything older than 5 years because they cannot warranty it. This car is immaculate and its drives beautiful. Tomorrow I am going to bring it to a mechanic that I know and run a diagnostic. $10,800$ Would you buy it? and what do you think the problem is.
Thanks, Rocky |

don't know
Even beside's the warranty issue, I still don't understand why they don't fix the problem(s) underlying the "engine electrical" code. Sounds suspicious to me, though I'm given to suspicion. If you're okay with the car and are willing to take the risk with any problems underlying the code, I think are the first questions for you to address before proceding.

Welcome to the forum.
If it's an electrical problem with the engine, I can't imagine anything that would cost more than $500. in parts to repair......worst case. The price of $10,800. seems very good for a vehicle with mileage at 69K, provided that it is legit. |

If the wiring harness is original, that may be the culprit. I've never done it, but from what I've read, it isn't extremely hard to change.
That car is cheap because it has a problem. Mine had similar problems, which resulted in a very high bill. More than half of what I paid for the car for repairs, including labor. This was done by a previous owner. In addition to a wiring harness, mine got new ECU, RLC, fuel pipes, glow plugs and more. Unfortunately, the factory doesn't seem to sell the repair manual for that car. They stop at '95. Perhaps soon. I don't think you would need the manual to change the wiring harness, if it is bad. If you can look at the car, you should see just how bad they are. If the car really is in excellent condition and that milage is accurate, you can afford to put a bit into it. I should note that I really like my 210. It's a bit flimsier than the old tanks, but it drives great. ETA: Be gald I don't live there. Last edited by Matt L; 01-04-2006 at 09:33 PM. |

Feel free to contact me by personal message or by e-mail if you wish; you probably don't want to post all the details here for these scalawags to read. |

Thanks for the advice everyone, I guess I will find out what the problem is with it tomorrow. For those asking about the 300, give me a call @ 850 501-0879. I live North of Destin and Ft Walton. The car is complete and it probably wouldnt take much to get it going. Again, thanks for your help.

Flooded Car?
Make sure it's not a water damaged car. Somebody I knew drove his car through a flooded street. It stalled, and was pull out by a tow truck. He spent $$ fixing the electrical system, and it is still not right!
