Someone want to add #10?:D

That's just the exterior stuff, I'm not even going to list the defacing you can't see (after-market air cleaners, weird VWO conversions, etc.)

Man, are you a purest! I guess my tinted windows, (bought it that way) and Ronal Penta 16" wheels with 225/50 tires put me in there with the "pimp my ride" crowd.

How do you feel about the options that tuners like AMG and Lorinser put on Mercedes? To me they were the pioneers of the "aero" and "monochrome" look that all new cars strive for.

Are you making your own biodiesel or buying it premade?

I guess he would be Biodiesel Jack.

I buy my biodiesel and store it in barrels. I started getting into making it, but I drive so little that it wasn't worth my time and effort to make it.

I want to try to make a test batch of biodiesel. I got 4 gal. from the local chinese rest. and been on the journey to forever website but have not made any yet. My tranny just went south so I have my hands full with that.

I don't think they're horrible, but I wouldn't do it. At least the Ronals are from the correct period.

I hate all that plastic crap, even if it does have AMG stamped on it. I just think it looks cheap. IMHO, the "aero" and "monochrome" look is one of the reasons that new cars, including MB, all look pretty much the same. I like chrome bumpers and big vertical grills. If I wanted a "new" car I would just go buy one.

In hindsight I had crappy oil when I did it. I got partially hydrogenated oil, that came from a chinese place. Partially hydrogenated oil is really hard to process. If it is solid at or near room temperature I wouldn't mess with it. But I hear it makes good summertime biodiesel. But you have to add a ton of lye to get the reaction to go to completion. If I remember correctly mine titrated around 9 (which is extremely high). I did the Dr. Pepper method with 1 liter of oil and got about 10mL of good BD out of it. Moral of the story: don't use partially hydrogenated oil. Find a high end joint that changes their oil often and uses high quality oil.

We'll see how long the tassels on Biodiesel Jack's new years hat will last at highway speed. Probably not very long. :rolleyes2

13. Any wheels that are noticeably larger than stock.

Unless there is a functional reason; ie larger than stock brakes. One of the things I love to laugh at the tuner wannabes for is those 16"+ rims displaying cute little 8" DRUM brakes out back (invariably proudly painted red or yellow).

I agree, that there are valid reasons for larger wheels on cars with significant performance modifications. But, IMHO, 17-inch chrome wheels on a stock W123 is just silly looking. The last thing my W123s need are larger brakes. They already have considerably more stopping power than "going power," if you know what I mean.:D

16's on a w126 body look like they belong there...not too big and not too small...

I guess I am a purist too becuase it took a lot of deciding to finally get my wheels for my car. I REALLY didn't want to ruin the stock look however the 14's were just NOT cutting it. I was up on the sidewall daily (I drive sorta fast) and ate through tires like mad. These 16's seem to be holding up a little better.

The only way I would put aftermarket (but professional!) tint on my 300SD was if it was black...which hopefully some day it will be :)

I know changing a car's color is a sin but I really want a black 300SD and they are hard to find.

phidauex 01-05-2006 01:57 PM

I think tint is fine. I think it looks good on any 'modernish' color, like silver, white or black. Debatable on other colors. I do know that my 35% tint (not mirrored or anything) looks great on my silver 300TD. The tint was applied back in the early 90's (I've got the receipt, came with the car), and it looks great even now, clearly a very professional job.

Larger wheels look good too, in some cases. I don't know about 'chrome', but the 16" CLK wheels look good on my wagon. Its a matter of taste, to a certain degree, but these are stock MB wheels, they are painted a silver that is almost a dead match for the Astral Silver on the car, and they don't look freakishly big, just a little bigger than stock, and I think they are totally appropriate.

There are some things that are definately crazy, like spoilers, but other things, like tint, or larger rims, that are just matters of taste. If it doesn't destroy the car's ability to go back to stock condition, then its fine with me. I don't want my 300TD to look exactly like every other one that rolled off the lot, but I don't want to spoil its classic intended look.

I guess I'm pimping with my 16" 225/50-16 tires (on vintage 1983 AMG Penta rims) and my MP3 radio..with my MB Quart speakers front and rear...

Ha! You sound like my dad, he's a purist to the extreme!

I guess I'm "pimped' out too with my Rockford-Fosgates in the front, Sony X-plods in the back, a CD player radio, tinted windows, 15" polished rims with 225's and chrome fender trim (the fender trim will come off when I get it repainted though).
