Uh the duramax engine isnt a chevy made engine. isuzu makes the engine and its very efficient and quiet. Overpowers the cummins and powerstroke as well. And isuzu is the only company that still mass produces diesel engines in the US. Sure they are in box vans or the duramax but they have a great reputation on power, reliability, and cost over many other big diesel brands (cummins, international, volvo, etc.)

I'll take one if I can find one here for a reasonable price. Most of the ones I've seen for sale in the US are pretty beat-up and overpriced.

Then your best bet would be a diesel Land Cruiser, one of the most reliable 4WD ever made and the HINO made engine is simply indestructible.

although i wouldnt mind having a diesel in my scout, the nissan built motor has a rep for having weak heads, i think.

a lot of folks think that gm ruined the diesel market deliberately as larry stated. personally i dont know but it wouldnt surprise me.

the duramax appears to be a lot better than the earlier gm light truck diesels, but i know several folks who have had fuel injection problems. fuel economy is significantly less than my cummins too, i think.

i personally like my big heavy six cylinder cummins. unfortunately it is not offered in any suv.

there was a company near lafayette fifteen years ago that made kits to put a cummins in a chebby truck. i once saw a sub with one. it looked like it grew there.

i like the idea of the v10 toureg, but i will stay away til they prove themselves and become cheaper (used) to buy. i would like it even more if it were offered with a sixer tranny.

i also would probably have to go to a smaller travel trailer if i had one of those.

diesel engines

I had a 6.5 turbo in my 1995 chevy truck. I replaced the IP twice before 60,000 mi. The first time was at 11,000. Isuzu might help GM with the 6.5, but go to the Isuzu link and see how many V type diesel engines they make. http://www.isuzuengines.com/Products/Products.htm

IMHO diesel engines should be straight not Vs. I know MB is coming out with one for 2007, but check out how reliable the new MBs are.

As for the diesel SUV, if you don't want a RHD I think you are out of luck as far as reliability goes. I agree with whoever wrote that the 87 300TDT was the best SUV ever made.

Good luck,

Chris

man this would really make my SD fly... 860LBFT tourque! not a lot of HP though... it must be geared to the hilt. probably a 12 or more speed tranny.

wow check out the specs on this puppy

Lubricating System Capacity 30 U.S. qt (28.5 liters) WOW that will set you back a bit with Mobil 1
Total Engine Weight (dry) 1,425 lb (647 kg) Hmm, maybe not in the SD add in 30 qts... what 1500LB ENGINE! I don't think the 14' rims would support that load!
and 2600 RPM govenor kinda limits vehicle speed with our trannys and rear ends.
but man it could pull over a house~!

Tom,

I know well, before moving back to India from US,I asked around all the Toyota dealers for one and was told,no way, pity as the HINO engine is in the class of the OM616/617,super torquey, gets the job done well,on or off the road.

Cross Lander

Have you heard of the Cross Lander SRV (Sport Recreation Vehicle)? When I first heard of it, it was going to have an International four cylinder Diesel. It was suposed to be in the US a long time ago but there has been a few problems getting it here.

lots of interesting diesel vehicles offered other places.

when in italy christmas 01/02 i rented a nine pass renault van with a little four cyl diesel turbo and a fiver speed. it drove very nice, excellent steering handling and brakes. much much nicer to drive than my suburban. over 20 mpg easily, and didnt hit the rev liimiter til about 85 or so. mph.
