If you had a remote filter adapter it might could be welded on then run hoses to a spin-on filter adapter topside and never have to sweat oil changes again!
Dieseldiehard, have you seen remote filter adapter's that exist for any MB car? Just wondering if I should do a search on that.

Contact oilslick, he may find a used one at the salvage yard.

Yes, a new starter and battery are long overdue.

Yes, that would work. I found a company that sells inserts. Don't know the price, but it looks a better solution overall than a Helicoil.

One thing I hate about the 220 (gasser) I own is changing oil, the dreaded filter cannister on 115's is a bad deal.
I had one experience with the long bolt that holds the housing on, it was real loose when I went to change oil last year, I could unscew it by hand, yet it never leaked around the filter for some reason so I consider myself lucky as it had been over a year since the last oil change (at the time I didn't drive it very much).
Yes, it is well designed. Seems a new o-ring gasket and even a little pressure on and it won't leak. I was doing one of those zero degree F oil changes before the sun came up and figured talent would win out lol. Matt might have a base assembly. I'm just going out to look at it now to see what's involved in removing the old base assembly. There's a company that sells inserts that might be better than Helicoil, but still have to drill and counterbore and retap; but I wouldn't have to worry about trying to break off the tang of the Helicoil.

No!
I was saying that I have never seen one in a post long long ago when someone piped up and said they had seen them before, as if I wasn't around at the time they were introduced (probably while the cars were still relatively new).

I'd really love to find one for the 230.4 engine in my 200. For no other reason that you can put a big filter up top instead of the undersized one that fits in the little can underneath in stock 114/115 cars. If I had a lathe and lots of time I believe I could even make one that would fit and work, all it is is a can with a septum, two hose fittings and a central hole that a bolt goes thru to hold it tight against the filter base. The O-ring groove might prove a little challenging for me as I'm not a machinist by trade. Why doesn't some 115 lover find a machinst that will make up some using a CNC, then the cost per unit would be trivial. Making just one would take about $200 in labor.
