Newbie with some questions...

Hello!

Recently purchased a 1984 300CD with 99K original miles, the car is in great condition but needs TLC. I am the third owner and know the first two; they’re kind of sort of in the family.

I need to get the following things done and was wondering if anyone can provide input on:

1.Wood trim on glove box is bent and un-glued, where can I get another piece? Are there any MB bone yards in Ct?

2.Antenna won’t go up or down.

3.Passenger side rear view mirror is not securely attached to the door, is it hard to tighten or adjust?

4.The engine mat located under the hood is starting to peel off, material is dry and brittle.

5.Having trouble starting, the amber light (not sure of correct name) does not come on when I first turn key. After first attempt to start engine it fails but the light will work for the other attempts. It is now taking me approximately 5 attempts to start the engine. Once it starts up I have no problems, I assume this can be glow plug related.

I have performed a search on some of these things and have printed out the write ups found, example: How to change Glow Plugs. It’s a great write up with pictures!

What Shop/Repair manual should I purchase?

Thank you for you input.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new purchase.

1. There is lots of wood floating around. I have found lots of pretty good wood in local junk yards. I have a couple sets of spares if you are interested. There is also lots of info about refinishing the wood yourself. Sounds like the wood is warped and is bending the metal. If the wood is warped you should get another piece. You'll never get it to stay flat again. To get it off you have to take the latch off the glove box door. It's kind of a pain but it's worth it once you have repalced the bad wood.

4. You can replace the hood mat. Just make sure you cover the engine while you pull the old one off and clean the hood.

5. Test all your glow plugs. Diesel Giant has lots of good info on all thing diesel mercedes. But there is a page for testing glow plugs and the glow plug relay.

Here is an online shop manual. You can get CD versions and book versions. The CD is pretty cheap, but the books are quite expensive. Online Shop Manual. I also use the Hayne Manual, it's not super technical but expalins things very good.

Also visit the links at the top of the diesel disussion page there are two DIY stickies with more info than any one person can withstand.

First, you need to acquaint yourself with the "search" option at the top of the page.

But...
1) Ebay
2) After search to diagnose, antennaworld.com
3) More info needed. (Manual or auto) You need a repair manual or CD.
4) Click on "fastlane" at the top of the page.
5) Replace your glowplugs. That should do it. If not, replace your relay.

Welcome!

You are better off getting the wood used, I know of no bone yards around here however. But you would probably have good luck posting a wanted add in the parts forum or looking at ebay.

FYI new wood from MB is probably in the $200 ball park.

As for the glow plug light not coming on that could be a few things. On the W126 their is an 80amp strip fuse that controls them and brakes. Or you could have a few dead glow plugs. Autozone usually has them in stock and they are cheap, you only want Bosch don't waste your money on the other brands.

As for the mirror, are you sure it is loose? They are spring-loaded for idiots that can't back out of garages. Keep that iin mind.

Thumbs up

yeap, I just finished printing out a bunch of good write ups from Organized MB DIY links. I'm putting together a binder and keeping it in the garage for easy access when working on Ol' Betsy.

Thank you all for the information provided!!
