Funny isn't it...it gets posted over and over and over again...

Personally when I find something cool, I do a forum search for it with a few different keywords and if I find nothing, I post new. If I find the old stuff, I put a post on it so the new people can see it.

That is a pretty amazing engine. I'm a freight broker and work with the shipping co's. Those engines will go in the new Mega Ships that are being built...

I guess I should start doing that. I hate to beat a dead horse. It's all new to me at this point. I have only been in the diesel world for about a year.

I wouldnt put that big of an engine in a modern ship Id probably put a couple large sized diesel engines to power a generator and electric motor or a turbine to generate electricity

Electricity production is extremely inefficient in a setting like that compared to just connecting the engine right to the screw for propulsion. The size electric motor and generator and all the accompanying equipment to control all that would be even bigger/more complex than just that engine!

When you think about the fuel consumption of one of those ships, they said the biggest engine consumes up to around 1,660 gallons of fuel oil (heavy stuff, and less refined/expensive as diesel) per hour.....but, a typical semi doing 70 on a USA freeway consumes roughly 12 gallons of refined diesel in an hour. It is hauling about 1/14500th of what that ship is capable of. (according to a source on mega ships, they can haul up to 16,000 containers (semi trailers) of goods!!! So, were all those goods to be truck-shipped, you would come up with a total of 174,000 gallons of diesel PER HOUR. Those ships (and trains) are WAAAAAY more efficient. wshew....those are big ##'s The ship is over 103x more efficient than by truck.

" Two-stroke turbocharged diesel" That took a little work to get my brain around. And I still want to see the torque wrench they use on a head bigger than my shop!

There are a lot more 2 stroke diesels around than you think. IE...detroits...http://www.transdiesel.com/Engines/DETROIT-DIESEL-2-STROKE-ENGINES.asp

I watched a great show on the History Channel last night. It was about great machines. One part was about the largest sea going diesel engines. This thing was a ENORMUS! 6 stories high. It pushed a massive container ship. The best was that underway they could shut a cylinder down and do everything from disconnecting that piston from the camshaft to replacing the piston head, the rings and even changing the cylinder sleeves. All while the rest of the massive engine was running.

Truly incredible. BTW, the ships Chief Engineer sported the same 4 stripes as the ships Master. Loved it!
