block heater test. yet another question.
yes i know that the bh is at .3 ohms when working. i am wondering if when the heater has been on will the oil on the dipstick be warm? mines cold. the bh was plugged in for a couple hours.

The block heater heats the water in the water jacket to a temperature in the range of 100 degrees F. There is probably some specific value, but it is generally not high enough to open the thermostat, purposely, as that would just add to the heat load, for no benefit. The gadget is also not supposed to boil the water locally, so the maximum temperature you can expect to reach is somewhat dependent on ambient, but should register on the temperature gage when you turn the car's instruments on with the key. Try touching the block or squeezing the hoses to see if the block or the hoses are warm. The block heater will generally not do a good job heating the oil. The pan is below the block, and has no water jacket passages, so you would be counting on the block getting hot enough to heat the pan by conduction, not likely without really cooking the water. Another indication is, when you get in the car, you get a temperature indication that is not the usual pegged to cold, and you get warm air (not hot) from the heater once the engine is running. Jim

that sounds like a description of an in-line heater for the water like a zero start. i thought the mb bh heated the oil in the pan also. so maybe i am wrong? the temp guage was over 40 when i started the car yesterday.
