Forbes.com video boosting diesel cars

Great that they mention cleaner burning newer diesels, but they aren't very friendly to MY car...

How NOT to buy a MB Diesel:
Know little or nothing about diesels or Mercedes Benz.
Get the WVO fever.
Drive 70 miles to a used car lot in the country.
Buy the car without having it inspected, because it seems like a good idea at the time....
I'll be back. I'm gonna need help.
I love this car already!

I agree, they're unfreindly to mine too. We're all probably not "helping" the stereotype against diesels chugging around....but who cares. Our cars are certainly more refined than "neighborhood poisoning loud smoke machines" as they talked of in the video.

I usually generate the interest when I snap back the lower greenhouse emissions levels from even my 617, and how long (obviously) the engine has lasted compared to their econobox gasser.... Its always a hoot down at the tires place when I bring both of them in to get rotations... Lots of stares and murmur.

smoky e300

The trend is that the US RARELY gets many auto variants and engine combo's - diesel or not. The Forbes video guy hedged that question pretty well.

on another note, my wife's 99 E300 is far smokier at startup and hard acceleration than my 98 Suburban with 6.5TD, and i am perplexed to say the least.

Not a very informative video to me as all that was said is stuff I've known for months. That senior editor needs to be more specific in his reporting though: the "stinky, slow" diesels of the 1970s and 1980s were mostly GM's junk not our MBs. My 300SD even 23 years after it was manufactured only releases visible amounts of black smoke when under heavy throttle.

Me too. My wife's got the same car and it didn't smoke till we had it chipped.

Mine rarely smokes, and that "Senior Editor" looks to be about 20 yrs old.

What is interesting is how that kid throws out a blank statistic. 1994 was the magic model year that new production diesels stopped smoking.
They all went with the patches and gum treatment instead, right?

Every diesel emits SOME hydrocarbons. And at WOT, even the cleanest E320 CDI will puff a bit.

I have been driving it hard lately, blasting out every molecule from in my engine. It smokes quite a bit when I do that, "oh well". normal driving doesn't produce anything visible in daylight now.
