I disagree with the elliot.org comment about I-45 between Houston and Dallas. Once you get past Conroe and the construction, it's pretty scenic, and the traffic flows fine if you drive right (don't hog the left lane). If you think I-45 is bad, then frankly, you shouldn't be driving at all.

i-90 thru the nw burbs and o'hare bad road? with half a million people living within 10 minutes of 1-90 i guess there will be some traffic. trucks o yeah trucks. the only alternative are over crowded surface streets. its a busy stretch of road from i-294 to ill 59. deal with it. folks in other cities complain about their traffic and after driving in the chgo mess i find everyplace else smooth sailing. in fairness the state of illinois tollroad authority tries to keep the road up but it takes a pounding from commercial traffic. so what do they expect? there are no commercial only expressways that i know of anywhere.

it is made worse if you go to yahoo maps or mapquest as the roads sometimes merge with other roads and these services call these merges turns. i grew up with a rand mcnally atlas in my car and still use it.

There's something to be said about talented drivers. There is some construction along that route, but it's relatively minor compared to what most Houstonians have put up with over the last 20 years.

I did that exact drive on Friday last week in a rental car - 85-90mph the whole way, plenty of others doing the same, very few DPS (those that did left them on all the time so they were easy to spot), and a quick, simple drive. No problem.

What about I-35 between Georgetown and San Antonio (the whole Austin area), that's one terrible drive. I can remember going to San Marcos a couple years ago and taking 4 hours between Waco and San Marcos.

How about GR Michigan, where the roads should just be gravel! Because thats smoother than pavement with craters in it.

I swerved tonight to avoid a huge pothole on the right side of the car, so what happens, I hit a nearly as big one on the left!!! INSANE. You have to drive like your on a car-test-course just to hit patches of smooth road around here.

Sigh.

Yesterday I had to swerve at 75mph because there was a CANYON of a hole in the freeway, had I hit that I'd probably have lost my control arm/wheel!!!

I NEVER see road crews out, and there isn't even any snow for the past three weeks (none in sight, its 36 out right now!)

Rant done...for now.

forget all that. If you want hazardous driving, you can identify it in one word. Boston.

I drive the I-5 all of the time. It isn't nearly as bad as they make it out to be. Actually a good twenty miles of that stretch has the ocean on one side and Camp Pendelton on the other making it pretty darn smooth sailing. The worst part is on the 5 right where the 805 starts. There is all sorts of construction and a couple of dips that will just about bounce your car into orbit.

Try I-4 in Florida. Especially the parts around Orlando. They need to make "My Car Survived I-4" bumper stickers.

Sorry I ahve to drive on I-95 in the New Haven and Bridgeport area. Some of the pot holes in New Haven are freaken scary!

Lucky for my they paved El Grasso last fall so it is no longer like driving in Niger.

Ha.... I-4 between Tampa and Orlando isn't too bad anymore now that it is 6 lanes (except in Lakeland), but I avoid it between Disney (westside) and downtown at all costs... there are a couple toll roads that are worth the cost.

And I'd have to agree with the FL Turnpike between Orlando and Miami. It is very boring, and very expensive.

in the past one of the worst roads i was on was the freeway thru penn. we got off the smooth tolways of indiana and ohio and needed to go north and it was 20 or 30 miles of over cold patched road. it was in both lanes and there was no way to drive around the rises. they were everywhere.

boston very challenging. using the breakdown lane as a thru lane at rush hour very imaginative. boston to the cape on the 2 lane parkway after 5 pm lots-of-fun!!

NJ in their top 5

NJ Turnpike in their top 5.
I can agree on that. I prefer to drive with the trucks as they are usually much better drivers compared to the majority of cars. They understand the laws of physics and drive accordingly.

At least in NJ, they stopped some of the tolls on the Garden State Parkway, in both directions, eliminating some toll booths on one side.

Their arguement for many years in favor of toll booths in both directions?
If we eliminate the toll booths, the tollworkers will be out of work.

The trucks may know how to drive better than the cars, but I still avoid the truck lanes around on the Turnpike. Around the Newark area where it is seperate roadways and 14 lanes, there is so much crap on the road that I have recieved numerous rock chips and a cracked windshield from rocks getting thrown and kicked up by the trucks.

The Florida Turnpike between Orlando and Miami is very expensive.
I picked my car up near Orlando. Had a dreamy cruise home.
I left there about Midnight. Probably could have taken I-95 at that hour?
I was only concerned with getting my baby safely home.

U.S. 1 can be a pretty disgusting road.
It's the only highway through the Keys.
This time of year is the worst.
It's still usually always moving, at least...
just hard to pull across the highway sometimes.

Still WAY better than the real world.
