I was rear ended by one of those big Infiniti sedans about 1.5 years ago, he wasn't paying attention, I was sitting at the light waiting to turn, it was raining, he hit the brakes and slid into me at about 25ish mph. I felt a "kuh-blump" and my head went back against the head rest gently. The guy runs up to my window and says "You alright?!" I say "yep, barely felt it." So I get out to inspect damage, I couldn't find any on my bumper, it was already scuffed up a little anyways....his car wasn't so lucky. He smashed in his plastic bumper, and damaged his grill pretty bad.

He said "is it ok if I just fix it myself and we not bring insurance into it??" So I said "sure, no harm done" and he thanked me and we both took off..

The other time I was hit I was sideswiped by some drive on drugs or alcohol at night, after he hit me they took off like a bandit, so they got away. Oh well.....I swerved enough so that all damage was confined to the rear passenger door, it was pressed inward a bit, and I lost the little trim piece behind it thats on the fender. A little work and it can probably be fixed like new again, I'll do it eventually when I can afford it.... The door itself functions fine, and the window does too.

It sounds more exciting than it was. I was in a '02 ford focus, they were driving a 80s Toyota wagon. I chased them for about a mile at speeds approaching 70 MPH! It was a 50 mph zone though. They wouldn't pull over despite me honking the horn and flashing the lights so I got their licence plate number and drove back to where he hit me to check and see if I had been pushed into the person in front of me. The sheriff said he found them right away, the woman said that she her daughter was driving because she had a suspended licence but my description of the driver fit the woman perfectly. I think she has been charged with hit and run, driving with a suspended licence and obstruction of justice for lying.

I got rear ended twice by an old blue-hair one time.

Was sitting at the red light, and she rolls into me. Then she backs up, stops, then rolls into me again. No harm done.

One other time I was sitting in rush hour traffic, waiting for the cars ahead of me to go. Woman comes flying up behind me and swerves at the last second, barely clipping my rear corner. She told me "You stopped right in front of me". That one could have been worse...

I had a lady whip out right into the rear end/side of my 300SD...she was exiting a parking space (street side parking) as I was driving past.

You would think you'd check your blind spots...or look in the mirror..or LOOK OVER AT THE w126 BODY FILLING YOUR WINDOW!

*sigh*...screwed up my bumper mount thing a little near the wheel well but I just have to get in there and do a bit of re-bending to make it look right.

Save that for when I paint the car

I got some scratches in the grey plastic...she turned her silver car black and messed it up pretty bad. I was rather upset becuase I get tired of people being so careless in such simple situations but she was scared out of her mind. Her new econobox versus what she probably saw as a VERY expensive mercedes.

Jokes on her I guess

I was rear ended by a new CTS on a snowy day inthe 250 with non-impact bumpers. I had a scuff on the rubber strip and so did he. It was an honest mistake I watched him brake early but my luck he hit a small patch of ice. That could have been much worse with the non-impact bumpers. I turned around and came right home and said screw school (30 minutes and 3 miles into my normal 15 minute 10 mile drive).

Attacked in her own driveway!

As long as we're sharing sad stories, let me share mine.

My 85 300D is still in the driveway, the same place it was when it was attacked (by my wife). She was backing up in the minivan, foot slipped from the brake to the accelerator and catapolted my 300D about 6 feet from where it was parked (not gently I might add). Before it stopped moving, the 300D took out a number of bricks on the garage. The passenger back door only opens about 12 inches, the passenger front door is functional but not much to look at. The sad part is the rest of the car is in excellent shape. I drove it for about a month after the "adjustment". Conclusion: It's worse when your wife does it!

There is a happy ending to this story though. I recently replaced the 300D with an 02 E320 with 35K (by far the nicest car I've ever owned). Wife is sorry. Wife was also supportive of the purchase.

That sucks Fuzz.

You could try what I do during the winters up here (and have started doing unconsciously when at home) to keep from getting rear ended. Seems the bozos here in Michigan like to wait till the very last second before applying brakes, which result in numerous rear enders. My defense has been to stop with at least one complete car length, preferably two (except some dipwad always tried to squeeze into my "zone"), then watch the rear view. As the approaching car gets closer, I let the car inch forward always ready to apply right foot to eat up my cushion in the event dipwad doesn't quite stop. It has worked well for 2.5 winters now, knock on burlwood.

Good strategy!

That's the strategy that I applied to keep me from hitting those in front of me...problem is, I used up my cushion and she still hit me.....

Remember Mike, I learned to drive in suburban Detroit!!

the cushion thing reminds me of the time

that i (hijack) was in chicago at the museums with my entire family, wife and three or four small childern in my not really that old 123 300dt. this was about 1989. well on the way home the freeway was completely backed up so i got off and stopped at the nearest gas station. i said to the guy at the counter "is there any way around all this traffic jam?" he said sure. just go over that way a few blocks and turn south on maxwell st. (i think). well, as we went south things deteriorated socially. soon we were driving past burned out buildings with lots of scary looking men standing around fifty five gallon drums with things burning in them. and me in an almost new looking benz with wife and small kids. by this time i was pretty deeply committed to staying the course. so i kept my eyes open and tried to avoid at any cost stopping at lights. when i had to stop i made sure to leave enough space (this is my feeble connection to this thread) between me and the car in front that i could cut out and around if anybody started heading for us. well, no one did and we made it through and got back on the freeway some miles south after i stopped at a safe looking place and cleaned out my drawers.

lesson learned: be careful who you ask about shortcuts in areas where you might encounter dangerous situations.
