What type of ATF fluid for '80 300D? Dexcon 3 or PS?

My manual says Dexcon 2, so will Dexcon 3 work? Many people say on here to use PS fluid, but will it work, is it safe?

Either regular Dexron III or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF will do as well. The synthetic is about 3x as expensive. I run it, I think it runs way better with it, Especially, when its cold out. It may be all in my head, but I pour so much money into my car as it is, that things like tranny fluid costing more don't really phaze me.

Sorry if my post was confusing I missread the original. Power steering fluid belongs in your power steering system.

Regular Dexron III is fine for your tranny.

Sorry!

Question Clarification??????

Are you asking what to put in your transmission or your power steering pump?

Most of the recommendations for the power steering is "Power Steering" fluid.

For the transmission, the use of Dexron III or IV is recommended.

said another way: PS fluid is PS fluid and AT Trans fluid can be Dexron or Mobil 1 AT fluid.

The recommendation for power steering fluid is/was Dexron ATF for the cars with multiple belts up to the mid-80's somewhere. Once they went to the single serpentine belt, I think that's when the recommendation went to the Mercedes power steering fluid.

This thread is very unclear!!!!

The original post sounds as if he is asking what type of transmission fluid should he buy but most of the answers talk about power steering fluid. We need to be clear about which one to keep from giving bad information. The final post from the originator appears to point to the transmission.

no... its been discussed 50 billion and one times not to use atf in the ps pump.
loserstench: dextron 3 is the replacement for dextron 2. 2 is no longer made. dextron 5 can be used but is more expensive.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in the Transmission, and Valvoline Pro-Synth P/S fluid in the P/S pump. Works great. Both items operate extremely well with these fluids. Despite their GREAT cost The Mobil 1 is 5.74 a quart at AZ, and the Valvoline P/S fluid is $6.19 a quart...wshew.

It's called Dexron

I've seen people calling it Dexcon, and Dextron, let me clarify this for you, the correct name is DEXRON, don't fell bad, even MB has misspelled it "Dextron" in some of their service literature.
