Newbie...

I've been doing searches on here for a little while, and just wanted to say hello. My wife bought a blue '82 300D back in September, and then we bought a yellow '78 240D about a month later (for me). I've solved a few problems through searching these forums...and just wanted to say "Thanks".

The 300D is leaking trans. fluid and fuel - and has a nasty constant clanking noise (mechanic says piston slap, which worries me), but will be going to the shop this weekend. The 240D is running great, but burning a little oil and the odometer's broken (I'll mess with that soon enough).

They were both cheap, and need work, but so far I love them...and will certainly learn alot about diesel-run Mercedes. I learned alot about gassers with my International Scout a few years back...

Hope this post isn't annoying.

Welcome to the forums! I'm sure you will find everyone here is very helpful and can offer seemingly endless wisdom and help with working on these fine automobiles.

I've been a diesel-addicted person for nearly 3 years now, and I love every minute of it.

Welcome, and keep s posted on your progress. You should be able to find lots of info here, as I'm sure your searches showed. The fix for your odometer is in here somewhere.

Thanks!

We had the valves adjusted first thing. Also new Glow Plugs, all new fluids, filters changed...the thing didn't even have an air filter in it when we bought it (and drove it 4 hrs. home)...bad sign I suppose. Our mechanic (works only on Mercedes) said he'd never heard one clank quite as loud as this one...I dunno. He suggested the "piston slap", but didn't suggest a solution at the time. I'll ask him more this weekend.

The car has lots of power, and is actually pretty quick...the paint is in great shape, and interior is pretty good. No dash cracks, just seat wear on driver's side. I'd hate to have major engine troubles, but it's all a learning process, heh?

Welcome.
This OM603 is the only MB diesel engine sound file I could find quick.
Listen to the sound file in the following thread.

Is a 603 engine supposed to knock?

As far as the odometer I think you have the electric type. You can buy new gears at www.odometergears.com.
I did this and they work great. Do yourself a favor and buy all 3 if you go this route.

This tutorial shows how to repair the cable driven type:

Good luck.

CMP,

Here an easy test U can do yourself:

With the engine running, loosen the flare nut on the top of the injectors one at a time and listen for a change in the clanking sound. If U notice a difference, that is the cylinder that is making the noise.

But U don't know if it is the piston or the injector. Remove the injector from the cylinder that the noise changed and remove another injector. Then reinstall the 2 injectors in the opposite cylinder that they came from. Start engine, loosen the flare nuts one at a time and listen for a change in sound.

If the noise is in the same cylinder as before, something in the cylinder is bad. But if the noise change moved, it is probably a bad injector.

U will need a deep 1 1/16 inch or 27 mm socket to remove the injectors. This socket will also turn the crankshaft bolt so U can turn the engine by hand.

You might not need any speedometer parts. The numbers or gears might be slipping on a shaft and can be fixed with epoxy.

Thanks for all of the suggestions...that engine-sound link is especially helpful, and I'll order odometer parts directly...

PEH, I'll try that DIY test as soon as I can get to it. Anything I can learn to do on my own would be a big help.
