So, I tried the approach of ignoring the "adjusting nut" and pryed out on the alternator with a tire iron, had my neighbor hold it in place and then tightened the mounting bolts and that seems to hold it. At least, so far. I guess I'll have to keep that Studebaker tire iron as part of my tool kit...
Thanks for the posts, everybody. Your replies were invaluable to me! I assumed that, per the MB manual, the adjusting nut was integral to the process. I wish I hadn't spent the money on a new bracket and bolt ($90) but now I know and I won't do that again! Randy |
