Vacuum pump oil leak

Hello,

Sorry I tired some searching, but could not easily find my answer.

My 77 300D, new to me, has a oil leak on the vacuum pump. I noticed this leak coming down the block.

As well on the output pressure side there is some oil coming out. In fact my airfilter is very oiled up. But not soaking. Just damp. Is it normal for the oil to come out of here? Or do I have a seal or gasket gone?

I appreciate your help, thanks.

You need to rebuild your pump, I would guess. That older style is an easy job. Just be sure not to over tighten the diaphragm bolt. Also check the little roller and make sure it is 100% OK. Do a search and you'll find plenty of info on doing the job. You don't want too delay this job too long as oil in the vacuum lines is not a good thing and can damage your starter switch, which is a bugger to replace.

Bad diaphragm in the pump sucks oil into the air filter housing via the clear or white hose from the pump to the air filter. That hose should have no oil in it.
Like Stevo says, rebuild the pump.

Thanks for the info guys,

now when I search in the benz bin or this sites parts area I get asked which engine series I have:
either
12-108988-

or
-12-108987

the kits are different. I have a 300D 1977 model diesel. How do I know which kit is my kit I need?

Thanks for the help, Darryl

This pump rebuild is an easy job.
Done it a few times.
Usually the VIN number identifies the cut off for those various kits.

Darryl

Your kit is the cheaper one, (early) The one with the diaphragm. As I remember the 2 check valves come separate, I would change those out as long as your in there. Keep the old ones for spares if there any good. When you reinstall the pump, hand rotate the engine so the LOWS on the "roller coster" track are "up & down" , you'll see what I mean when you get in there.
