Sure it can just becuase a T stat is new doesn't mean it works. There have been plenty of bad ones right out of the box.

I am confused when the guage in the dash read 110C what did you shoot to get the 95C reading? If that 95C reading is correct that means your guage is off 15C.

How did bleeding the system go? How quickly does it heat up? It really sounds like an air lock.

well the mechanic said to expect a difference in temperature because the thermometer was at the very top of the coolant and the gauge reading is deeper in the radiator.

ill try that air conditioning on, and then check that fan, now i know what you guys mean.

I'm adding coolant in tomorrow. if it doesnt go up to 120 great, if it does... im giving in and getting it to a mechanic. and tell him to fix the heat also. this car is slowly breaking me down.

I have nothing helpful to add but I really feel for you. My '80 300SD is getting to me now as well, if I hadn't put in a new tranny not too long ago I'd have sold it by now.

The temp guage on my '85 SD went clear to the top and I discovered that the ground to the dash was bad. Replaced the ground and good as gold.

did it go straight to the top when you turned it on or something? Mine slowly goes up to 120. So, if it idles for a long time it'll stay around 100, then if i drive for a little bit itll slowly climb up to 120+. Ill report back in a little after i do what you guys reccommended to get the air out of the coolant lines.

I drove my SDL for a week last spring without the fan clutch installed. Now granted it never got above the mid 50's but I never realy noticed the temp's going up much.

These things make no heat at idle. It should idle all day long without the fan installed and never get much above 80C.

This was first recommended to you 8 days ago. If you ask them a question, do what they recommend. 9 times outta 10 you will be happy you did. If nothing else, it rules out things, and you can move on from there.
You have homework.......

correct, but the car doesnt start. So i could not finish today, because the interstate dealers arent open. But if the suggested procedure (pour coolent in upper hose until full, to get all air out) doesnt work, then its just time to bring it to a mechanic. I dont know how to fix the corroded (if they are) bypass lines and whatnot.

You also must get the nose uphill and run it with the heater on full blast to make sure to get the air out.

I filled the 617 after I rebuilt the head, in the manner that I suggested to you.

There is not a hill around here for miles.

The SD runs at 82° unless I really beat on it...........then it might creep up to 90°.

I needed to add coolant, every day, for the first five days the vehicle was utilized. Then, it remained on the mark and has not moved since.

Just do it.

yes sir mister carlton sir. I did that what you said. So, just drive my car everywhere, and at the end of each day add the appropriate coolant until day 5 which is when I wont need to add anymore?

I just have one question mr carlton sir, if in the 5 days my car is still running at 120, that wont ruin anything?

I checked the thread, but I might have missed it.............you added coolant to the head and were unsuccessful in getting the temperature under control??

You do not want to drive the vehicle if the temp. climbs above 115°C. You may well know that my own 617 head was cracked........presumably from some PO overheating it at some point in its life.

You'll generally know that a problem exists right in the driveway. If it's full of air, the temp will climb right over 110°C.

If this occurs, repost on the thread and we'll come up with additional suggestions.

Well, when you first add the coolant, till you cant add anymore, did your car reach around 100? (that first day) and then in the following days go down to 82?
