Austin85,

I edited my post above to show to which picture I was referring. I'm putting this post up so no one thinks you didn't pay attention

JimmyL

That is a "vacuum amplifier". Present on the 1985 and some 84 (CA for one) diesels. It has electrical control of vacuum to the EGR and the air recirculating valve. Often times, found inoperative, oddly enough

We're just "testing" ours.

Picture #1-

Maybe this will help, assuming the 85 has the black box with the vacuum valve levers on top of the valve cover. The white-yellow thing(the vacuum control valve) with your unconnected vac line should have two lines comming out of it. Out of the top it should connect to the vac source(i.e. the vac pump). The other line comming out should have three way connector with two black lines connected. One goes down to the transmission, the other goes up to the vacuum valve lever box thingy.

Hopefully I am not completely off.

On Dad's 85 Kalifornia, the mechanism on top of the valve cover is different from my 83. I'm not sure if the 85 Federal is the same or not. Maybe Whunter or Brian Carlton would know. I do know that the 85 leaves me scratching my head once in a while.

That is a "Pressure Regulator". #84 in the diagram
