I really don't think the speed will be an issue for me. I drove the Jetta TDI in Limp mode for the first year I owned it until I drove someone else's and realized something was wrong. (Dead MAF, if you know A4 TDI's, you know dead MAF's.)

Anyway, the 92 sold quick, or it had been in the paper for a while by the time I noticed it... I called today and it's gone.

Thumbs up

See if you can snag the 240 for $3000. That's what I got mine for, and it's a stick. The owner was asking $3800.

You're right, they aren't the best highway cars. I doubt they are the best town cars either.

Tonight I took the 240D on a 160 mile highway trip. My lowest highway cruise speed was 70 mph. The rest of the time I was cruising at 80+. Anything over 75 or so is pretty loud, but I don't like to have conversations at such speeds. Its much safer to pay attention to the road and car. I also like to be on the lookout for police.
If MB honestly thought the car was reving too high on the autobahn, they would have installed an OD transmission or a lower axle ratio. Remember, these cars were expensive, so I don't see why MB would skimp on the essentials.

I trust the engine to stay in one piece, even at top speed. If I was traveling across a state or two, I would lower my speed, but mostly to reduce driver fatigue and speeding tickets.

I only feel i'm hurting the engine when I run it down hills with my foot to the floor. I try to avoid this.

If I did the math right, a 240D at 85 MPH will be spinning 4600 RPM.

There is nothing to debate here. Either the 240D or the 92 is right for you. You should know immediatly.

Post #31 indicates the 92 was sold when he called about it.

Something tells me the 240D will still be available....

They are both fine cars and both have their positive and negative points. You really can't go wrong with either.

But wait owning these old cars is fun but if you farm the work out to someone else it adds up fast. You are selling your Jetta becuase you don't want to put $1k into it??

In old MB world $1k is what I would expect to put into any 25+ year old car in the first few months.

How mechanicaly inclined are you? Are you able to change the timing belt yourself on the Jetta?

If you are planning on farming the needed repairs out I would buy the 92 simpley because it is so much newer. More shops are familer with the W124 they are a dime a dozen. The 2.5 is also a proven engine and very durable.

Go for the 240d. Much easier to work on and parts are cheap.

Thumbs up 79 240 vs. 92 300D - another alternative

I have a nice 84 300TD sedan for $3000 (check it out on the for sale forum); not that far from La. Just adding food for thought. I own both types - but the W123's are a bit more special...

Guys, he posted almost a week ago that the 300D has sold.
I think you should hold out for a 240 manual, and there is a forum member in OR who has one for sale(Brandon314159). $3800 is not smart $ to spend for a 240D in my opinion, unless it was spectacular +. The stick totally transforms the 240 from it's automatic brothers. That is what folks who have them say. I've still only driven two 240's, and both were automatic.....
And, while you're looking around, I can't tell you enough how enjoyable the wagons are. (some more than others.....)

Tom, that literally made me laugh out loud sitting here! (I refuse to use the tired LOL)

I think I could fight through the ownership experience of an automatic 240, but don't think I wouldn't be looking closely for a 240 manual parts car!

For those of you who have driven manual trans 240D's....

Are you able to drive the car smoothly?

My father and I test drove a 4 speed 240D in such bad shape, it couldn't have had more than 30hp. It made our auto 240 seem like a rocketship. He keeps telling me to find a auto, but I haven't lost hope in the manual cars yet. I'm hoping the lugging, jerking, and truck-like shifting was just becasue of a tired car.
