Help! $1734 Injection Pump '95 300D
Can the dealership be correct??? They want to charge me a total of $2850 to replace my fuel injection pump! Can that be right? Are there any alternatives? I have a 1995 300D with about 185,000 miles.

Did you talk to Phil at Fastlane re the part?
This may be a "valid" price at the dealers, but if you can DIY it and buy it elsewhere, you may be able to save a lot of $$. I don't know the difficulty of the job, but others in our Forum may .... Ben Carter

Help! $1734 Injection Pump '95 300D
Carter,
The dealer said the pump costs $1734. Must be some pump. Hand crafted in Bavaria. I don't mind paying for the labor but I was very surprised at the price. Are there remanufactured parts and suppliers that I can check with? I looked at a couple of online places but all they had was the gasket. Brian

You need to find a good turbodiesel shop that reps Bosch fuel injection pumps and has the equipment to run it. If you can remove your pump and take it to them you can save some $$.
What in the world happened to it at that low a mileage that necessitates replacement?

The pump will be a Bosch remanufactured pump. The efficient way to do this is to take the pump off or have it done at your local independent and send it to a Bosch Diesel Service facility (they are all over the place) for rebuilding.

Bosch Diesel injector pump repair
Question 1 WHY does the Dealer think the injector pump is bad?
If the reason is valid (noisy, worn 'bottom end' or internal failure etc, send it to Pacific Injector in South San Francisco I can personally vouch for them. They reworked a Gasoline injector pump for my (1972 280 SE). Very reasonable. Small fraction of Dealer prices. Most parts in the injector pump that 'wear/fail' can be replaced without removing the pump. The delivery check valves are most common problem. Unless you ran real dirty oil in th eengine and ruined the pump 'crankcase' , these pumps will run 300,000 miles + without overhaul. Fuel contaminated with 'black crud' biolife can foul up the delivery check valves and injectors quickly. Dealers R&R pumps only, not repair. Any diesel truck fuel system service shop can probably do you right for far less than Dealer prices. |

Help! $1734 Injection Pump '95 300D
I took the car into a recommended repair shop that specializes in European repairs here in Ann Arbor. They looked at it for a day and said they couldn't find out why it was blowing smoke out and skipped when cold but didn't when it warmed up. They suggested it be taken to the Mercedes dealership which I did. The mechanics there tested each injector and narrowed the problem down to the injection pump by bench testing each injector and then the pump separately. The final verdict isn't in as to whether I need the whole pump or the top section repaired. They started working on it last Friday and it's now Wednesday. I'm not a FIY guy so I'm kinda at their mercy. Can't believe it has taken this long and a pump costs $1700+. Thanks for the info on alternate sources of pumps.
