help urgent vlve job related
 
having taken all the linakges off and valve cover .. now i cant turn the cam .. the power steering belt isnt tight enough.. how do i tighten it.. also how do you tell if your t-chain is within spec while im here... if i cant tighten the belt now ill just put the new gasket on since that was where my oil leak was coming.. all 4 bolts cept one were a pita to get off

Starter wire junction block right inner fender well.
 
Use a wire, and jump/bump the starter wire junction block right inner fender well.

Most here recommend a shallow 27mm socket and turn the bolt on the crank.

I took the fan off to get access to the 27mm bolt that turns the engine. Just make sure to leave a bolt in the fan assembly (after you take the fan off) so that the pulley doesn't come off or shift while you're cranking the engine.

here is what i did.. i said fcuk it and am in the process of putting everything back together.. i cant get the friggn allen bolt back onto the linakge assembly.. if only the alda was a few mm shorter it would work..

Brian, don't be too hard on TheDon!
The group also has sympathy to those who give up and take the cars to an Indy (note I said Indy, not the Dealer!) or burn their cars to the ground when leaking diesel fuel ignites accidentally, and to those who rebuild an engine completely using all new parts then start it up and it runs away and the engine self-destructs because the fuel shut off valve was installed wrong, etc, etc.

If he's truly way in over his head and needs to give it to an indy.........so be it.

i will do a valve job myself.. i just need to tighten the belt.. i was thinking of bumping it over before whunter suggested but i feared it would start and i wouldnt be able to shut it off... i started and drove the car around and made sure it shut off .. which it does.. now.. how do i tighten the power steering belt..

Yes, patience is definitely necessary!
Some words of encouragement:
You can tighten the steering belt and turn it over that way but its not the recommended way. I've done it though in a pinch to find TDC. I wouldn't do it that way to adjust the valves though! To tighten the steering pump loosen the hold down bolts, use a long bar (I think I used a 4 ft long 2X4 for this) to pry the pump away from the engine and tighten the adjusting screws. A super tight belt will wear out the water pump bearings so loosen it after your through.
And hope that you never have to remove that nut on the PS pump it will be so tight you will need a strap wrench and an air impact tool to get it busted loose!
If you bump the engine over using the starter just leave the key in the OFF position and the engine shouldn't start.

Just put some pressure on the belt with your hand and turn the eng with the P/S pump nut, it'l turn.

IF YOU DO, BY ALL MEANS Wear heavy leather gloves and don't lose a finger like a mechanic did down here (they still talk about him!)

Use the 27mm bolt
 
I have found it is best to use a 27 mm socket and turn the engine via the bolt inside the crank pulley. It is easy to get to from the bottom of the engine when adjusting the valves.

did you have to remove the fan shroud??

i have found evidence that the linkage was taken apart before so maybe valve jobs have been done

Reid, IIRC, the pump has a screw type tensioning adjuster, just like the a/c and the alternator. I did this a couple of months ago, but can't remember exactly where it is located because I'm sitting behind the screen and it's sitting in the very cold garage.:D
