Smile What is the little black knob on dash for ? 300D

I have had this 1980 300D for 20 years, but
never had anyplace where I could ask this question.

On the left side of steering column, below the instrument cluster.

There is a black knob, sort of has a head like a key, like you might turn it.
I can't remember, but I think when I pulled it it popped off.

I have never been able to figure out what it is for.

Just last night I was under the dash and tried to follow a cable behind it out of the firewall, it looks like it goes to a cable connected next to the cruise
control connection to the throttle.

Is it some kind of choke ?

To operate...before starting...push down the accel pedal and then turn that knob anti-clockwise. Start the car.

You will notice a fast idle...as it warms up...turn the knob clockwise until the engine is at its normal idle.

ALso useful for teaching people how to drive stickshift

It's described in the owner's manual.

Only the non-turbo models have it.
