w123 and other questions

what does the w123 designation refer to? it seems to be a stuttgart built car; is that right?

are there advantages to the w123 as far as performance, reliability and parts is concerned?

cheers

A W123 is any vehicle model with the same body / chassis as this.

They are extremely reliable (especially the 240D) and parts are readily available from the dealer, parts places (like fastlane), junkyards, and fourm members stock piles.

W123 is the chassis code. The 240D, 300D 300D Turbo, and 300CD are all 123s. I believe the 123 chassis began in 1976 and it ends in 1985. Then you have the touring (wagon) models, and the gas models. The diesels are longer lived than the gas cars.

Very reliable. Not sure how they compare to the earlier cars, but 123s are known for being the most reliable cars ever made. Parts are easy to find.

In the US we had the
280E and 280CE 6-cyl gassers,
240D 4-cyl diesel,
300D 300CD 300TD 5-cyl turbo and non-turbo diesels.

W=wagen (car) 123=baureihe (build line, or type) all Mercedes models have used this nomenclature since the 1930's.

M=motor (gasoline engine) OM=oelmotor (diesel engine)

I think that the W123 is one of the best engineered and built cars ever made, and they don't have all the electronics, so us shade tree mechanics can do just about all work required to these cars, and as you have probably surmised, if taken care of they will last for decades! That is why I have two of them.

Welcome to the best forum for the best car

in europe

they had 230es also. and also 250es. and we had 250 cars which had carbs too. probably 230 with carbs too. no e on the label. e means injected. a number like 250 with no letter means carburated. a d means diesel. a c means coupe. t means touring (wagon to us).

not a bad car in the bunch, although the carburated engines were hard to keep running right. the carbs were junk. worse than us carbs i think.

Yes. E=einspritzen(sp?) in-sprayed or injected?

since the sixties. i think it stands for einspritzenphunfal which roughly means one squirt per stroke or similar.

Yes the German carbs are trash. I'm not going to say another thing about them. I would say a W115 220D is the most reliable ever built out of all time. The W123 has more creature comforts like vac. operated door locks, electronic tachs, etc that can break (but still easy to fix).
