Smile Key for 81 300d made from mazda blank at ace hardware.

I have been searching for a while trying to find a place that could make a copy of my key. A friend told me he had one made from a non MB blank at ace hardware but could not remember what kind of car the blank was from. I searched through what they had and found that one of the Mazda key blanks was very similar. I had them go ahead and make a copy, and it worked.

It sometimes takes just a little wiggling, but I can put up with that since it only cost me $ 3.00 instead of $ 80.00 to $ 100.00 that the locksmiths were wanting.

The part number for the Mazda key at ACE Hardware is MZ19p.

Thought I would share this info with the rest of you.

Is it brass or steel? Be careful with the brass keys because they tend to leave shavings in the tumbler, which eventually destroy it.

i agree, especially if you have to wiggle it to get it to work, the $80.00 is a drop in the bucket compared to what it may end up costing if the tumbler seizes from the brass debris, likely $300-$400, you can get an original mercedes key ordered by vin for less than $40. i am not sure what they cost now, but it is reasonable

$80 to $100? I don't think even the dealer would charge that much for a new key (much less a copy)!

I've tried to get a few keys copied at Ace and they've never had the right blank (they only seem to have ~50 different types). Turned out the local locksmith was the way to go - they've got about 500 key types including Mercedes blanks w/ black plastic grip ($4.50) and w/o ($3.50).

They were brass, but it seems to be nearly impossible to find steel ones...

The last time I had a key made at the dealer for the 300TD it was under $20 and I received it within two days.

The key is a steel color on the outside but brass looking on the inside.

The MB dealership here is unbearable to deal with. Very pompas and condesending, unless you want to buy a new MB.
I coulden't even get an appointment for an alignment. I was told to call back when they were not so busy.

I would be interested in hearing where others got their keys and what they paid for them. I don't mind paying another $ 5.00 or so to get rid of the jiggle.

Thanks
RichC

Ask Phil at FastLane, he may be able to get them just like the dealer. If not, I know that some of the online parts sources can do it. You have to provide the VIN and a copy of your registration. Also, all bets are off if you locks have been changed previously. Finally, you could (maybe should) order a new tumbler at the same time. Using an imprecise copy will certainly wear out the one you have more quickly. If it all ready is worn you could be in for trouble. Based on what I've read here you do NOT want your starter tumbler to get frozen - replacement appears to be a miserable job. Good luck.

Just go to the dealer. I ordered a "regular" key for my dads 600, and it want even 30$. Now, if you are talking about the key that has the alarm and stuff all in one, those are upwards of 100$.

Just remember to bring the title or proof of ownership they accept. The key is ordered from your VIN#, they do not copy the key. Mine was for a 91 300D

I just went to a local locksmith and had a couple of keys made for a couple of dollars each. Granted they don't have the original rubber stuff but I just use them for the spare key in the house and the one I gave to my gf. My brother gave me a couple of rubber keys that were brand new from the p/o. Not sure where those come from. By the way, the locksmith keys were silverish inside and out so I'm guessing they're not brass.

best way to check is to use a magnet mercedes keys will stick to a magnet, let us know what you find, remember brass can be chrome plated.

As a dealer, the local Mercedes dealer charges me $18 for a key that arrives the next day.

This is for the older style key, not the newer ones.
