Two questions...'80 300SD
I have a couple questions that have been burning in my mind since rusty's forum dissapeared...
does anyone have the complete procedures for fixing the shift problem with the transmissions in the 617.095 cars? My tranny shop has a Mercedes tech, but he's not encountered this often enough to repair it effectively, I'd like something that I can print out and hand to this guy. Also, my SD won't turn off by way of key, locks don't go down on their own and the ACCII doesn't function properly, here's the symptoms. When the car is cold (it's winter here) everything but the DEF function is non-functional. The door locks don't come up or go down on their own till at LEAST 20 minutes of driving (same with the ACC controls) and the damned thing won't turn off, I have to push the stop lever... now, I know (because I've done it before) if I were to leave the car indoors overnight to thaw, everything works cherry. do I have a leak that's allowing moisture into the vaccum system and freezing? can I remedy this? wouldn't the "vaccum" effect prevent moisture build up? or should I be looking for a rebuild kit? Okay, so more than 2 questions...sorry, but I need to know.. I have a miriad more questions, but those are earmarked for later threads. Thanks in advance, Ryan Bzdel Saskatchewan, Canada |

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a vacuum leak is causing most of your problems. It is not uncommon for your model to have a bad master vacuum line from the vacuum pump to the brake booster area. Look closely around the area of the where the pieces of tubing are joined together. Haasman

Got,
Do the power brakes work OK? If they don't, its probably a bad vacuum pump or a leak between pump and the brake vacuum cylinder or vacuum cylinder itself. If brakes are OK, then its a leak in one of the vacuum lines or some component of the vacuum system. P E H |

More Detailed Vaccum diagnosis
here's some more detail....
Power Brakes : Work fine Heater Controls : when cold, they o not work, later on after 20 miutes or so of at-temp driving, they will work. Lock system: rear drivers door makes a slow attempt to lock and unlock, both passengers side locks try but fail, they only move about 1/4" no enough to engage lock. IP shut down diaphram : does not work. I have to shut it down manually. I know the vac resevoir is in the trunk area, are all the vaccum controlled systems tied to one main vaccum line (the one from the pump) if that's leaking, nothing should work right? what I don't get is why everything works when the car is in a warm ambient air environment, like my garage but at -20c nothing realy works...expansion and contraction of a crack somewhere in a vaccum line? Got,
Sounds like low vacuum due to a leak. The locks trying to work is an example of that. It is harder to work vacuum cylinders when they are cold, so low vacuum will cause things not to work when cold. You need a vacuum gage to check out the system to find the leak. Since the brakes work OK, the vacuum pump is OK. To check the vacuum shutoff, remove the brown vacuum from the IP, not at the IP but where it connects at the opposite end. With the engine running, suck on this vacuum line. This should shut off the engine, it does on my car. If it does, U know the shut off diaphragm is OK. A bad shutoff diaphragm will not affect the vacuum system that much because vacuum is only applied when the key is in the off position. P E H |

I just went on Rusty's site yesterday and found some of the transmission stuff is back, including adjustment instructions. The door locks have their own vacumm system that is found in the trunk by the spare tire. It sounds like you have a problem with the contacts in the circuit in the pump unit. I opened mine and cleaned the contacts and its been working fine since.

Here's an hypothesis: You have a problem with the ACC servo. It's cracked or otherwise damaged and when cold, the ice is locking it in position causing a vacuum leak. Once warm coolant flows thru it, it melts the ice making the servo functional and stopping the vacuum leak.

Vacuum leak
I found my leak in the vacuum lines running thru the drivers side door. I had to cut the black rubber sleeve to access the lines -since you open that door the most, you wear first. One line was broken as it was brittle due to age.I patched with a fuel line hose. This search took awhile. Next I plan on getting a vacuum tester.

Give this a try to see if it helps you in troubleshooting the vacuum system.

I am here to tell you, at -20C I couldn't even walk out to my car, much less see if anything on it worked..... That is why I don't complain here in the summer when it's 110! I even had to cool off the truck with AC today after it sat outside for awhile.... Nice job of finding your problem. Not enough vac, especially when the rubber diaphrams are so cold and so stiff.
