LED used to replace gear selector light -W123
The light for the gear selector had burnt out in my '81 240D. After some searching, I went to autolumination { http://autolumination.com/74.htm }and purchased one of these {Ba7s Single Contact Midget Flange ( Porsche Instrument Panels)} in red, as a replacement. The old bulb had melted some of the plastic housing. The LED will not melt anything and I can now see the letters in the dark.
I also replaced the Festoon bulb in the glove box with { 39mm = 1-1/2" Long 9LED } super white. It does great. I am going to replace the front and rear dome lights next.

My shifter light just went out...is that a plug and play install, or did you have to to some wiring?

It is plug and play. The bulb base is the same on that LED as it is on the original bulb.

the festoon light is 30$ on fastlane but thats because it has a built in timer to shut off when the car is turned off and doors closed.. but the rear one is only 3-4$ on fastlane.. |

I will get some pics and see if I can get them on here.

The festoon bulb that I mentioned, was just for the bulb not the housing. The 9LED bulb was $7. Quote:

I installed the bulb, on a W123, does the bulb illuminate the individual PRNDSL or Fiber Optics the strip.
I installed the LED, VERY VERY Bright, but inside the housing, I can barely see the lighting with everything put back togehter.

I installed the LED in the socket that comes out from the side next to the PRNDSL display. When it is light outside, I cannot see that it is lit up. When it is dark I see it fine. I also use an LED in the dial that selects heat or AC. I used a blue LED and it lights up nicely.
I have not tried to use an LED for the fiber optics.

UPDATE
I have taken pictures, kunda of blury, but pictures none the less. I will figure out how to post them here. Also I tried to use 194 4-Led Bulbs in my dash and immediately blew a fuse. They have a new super star single LED that I'm going to try next. I'm afraid to try the 24 LED tail light I bought. They may blow a fuse as well.
