300SD Brake Pads and Wear Sensors

Yesterday, I had a BRIGHT pad wear indicator light. Today, I pull the wheels and the top right side sensor wire is loose and doesn't seat firmly. I wrap it in electrical tape and seat it - it's fairly firm in there. Light goes away. Tonite, the light is back but DIM. The pads look thick enough to me but I've never dealt with MB pads. Brake fluid is at max.

Is the sensor(s) failing or are these pads too thin for an 83 300SD?

Note the electrical tape on the top wire - keeps it seated better.

those pads dont look too worn but it may be my vision. . its easy enough to check the wear sensors, pull them out and check the piece that goes into the pad. if its not completly round or looks worn in any way shape or form then its time to replace them. just be very carefull when removing them so you dont break any of them.

if they are loose

it shouldnt make the light go on.

if you leave them off it doesnt lite up.

maybe you have a faulty sensor wire.

thats correct, they have to wear, causing the sensor to ground out on the rotor.

Thanks, kmaysob and Tom W.

Faulty sensor wire grounding makes sense. I'll get new ones....Fastlane has 4 for $10.

PS: kmaysob, you sure have a low mileage 300SD LOL

The sensors may be cracked and grounding out on something. Either replace them or just pull them off. If you keep an eye on the pad wear you really don't need them. But they are still nice to have.

I started having the same problem with my brakes. Each time I step on the brakes, the pad wear light comes on. I just had my tires rotated and my pads still have over 70% left on them. Clearly something is wrong with one or more of the sensors. I keep a close eye on the pads for wear so I won't even bother with replacing the wear sensor.
