Major Surgery
Or a valve adjusting party!!!
“rg2098” and his father invited mplafleur, myself and daughter over to use their garage for a valve adjusting party. As you can see from the pictures; we had fun. Everyone except my daughter had a chance to get well oiled. Now, all “rg2098” needs is to convince his father to get his own 300SD. My daughter had fun with the two younger children, and did not want to come home. LOL

Now THAT would be a day well spent. I had a MB bonding day set for Friday and got a virus straight from the pits of hell that morning. Had my truck packed from the night before, and had a pot of coffee brewed for the 4 hour drive.
Glad yall had a good day. Me and a bunch of my fan collecting buddies get together a couple of times a year, and the day or weekend just flies past. Hobbies and interests are better shared. Good Job, Jimmy

I think the camera did have a flash!
I wear nitril gloves when working with epoxy in airplane building, but for a car? Grease and grime under my nails are a badge of honor that I have been wearing proudly for 30 years.

Meh gloves would help but my hands are so grease stained now anyway it doesn't matter. Lots of fun we had just can't wait until VAP 05 (valve adjustment party)!!!

Now that's a party
When we did this, we goosed the engine with the starter to turn it over, because it was quite difficult to turn it manually... is that a bad way to do it? |

Depends on who you ask, but I've adjusted thousands of valves using the starter to bump the engine over. On a gasser, disconnect the coil, dist., fuel pump or ecu fuse. Diesel will usually bump fine without starting if it's in short bumps and the engine hasn't just been shut down.

Ah heck. I prefer to use the big socket on the crank pulley. That way I can forget to take it off and watch it spin and hit things later.
Ya gotta get the daughter's hands dirty. Katrina gets more and more fun out of working on her car every time. Now she gets to learn about bodywork! Should only cost about $1,500 in parts to put it right. That reminds me. Time to adjust the valves on my 300D, if it ever stays home long enough. |

I just adjusted the valves on my 617 this weekend as well. Wasn't a party though - the only conversation was me cursing and my wife saying "are you done yet?". :p
I need to do it more often. It seems I have to relearn the technique each time. I have it down to only having to adjust each valve twice now. And I use a 27mm socket on the crank pulley.

Because
of this party, I will be buying my fifth set of MB diesel valve adjusting wrenches, all the others have been stolen over the years.
The glow plugs removed from rg2098's 300D where stuck with carbon, and one was damaged during removal, it was replaced. The glow plugs removed from mplafleur's 300SD, four where new, one was bad and stuck with carbon, now that the bad one is not stuck, it will be replaced this week. The work was fun for all. Suggestion: If you want a GTG near you, have a valve adjusting party. Save money, enjoy the company, learn how to or show someone how to. Don't forget the hand cleaner and towels. |

I brought the wrenches I bought for a rebuild on a '75 300D many years ago.
I think they helped a lot, but we did need to go out and borrow that "3rd" funny lookin' wrench for a couple of stubborn adjusting nuts.
