Also the value of the VW tdi's sky rocketed! you couldnt get a decent TDI at a low price. And most people buy the TDI's over the merc because the merc's get 28-30mpgs while a jetta or passat gets 50+mpg's. And this whole biodiesel thing has made the hippys and tree huggers happy too!

Don't believe everything your read on Ebay! I don't think the TDI's get 50+ mpg. 40+ would be more accurate. There are many MB diesels that get 30+ mpg, and some like the 190D, get about what the TDI's get according to what I've read. It depends mostly on the mass of the vehicle and the size of the engine.

Diesel #2 is consistently higher than premium here. I usually buy bio-diesel which stays pretty constant at $3.60. So in a perverse way, when the price of diesel #2 goes up, I feel less sting at paying the high bio-brew price. Now I just need to start making it myself. Don't really want to go SVO -- I've got a step van with a 6.2 GMC diesel and I don't want to go to the expense and trouble of a two tank system.

If'n I brew my own bio-diesel, I cover my bases better. Oh, I'm going to do it, any day now....

I've owned my Jetta since new and have put 137,000 miles on it. When I drive the snot out of it, it still returns a minimum of 42. Driven normally, it gets 48 to 49. And I'm in Florida, so the air conditioning is always on. If babied, they can easily get over 50.

$2650 for a 1981 300D ?

Hope this link works.
It shows a 1981 300D with 175K miles going for $2650.
I think that is a lot. Had no idea it could be worth so much.

If it's in good condition, why is this a lot of money? Benzs hold their value because they are made well, and last. Try to find a comparable value in a newer car.

That depends on the PO more than anything else. A PO that has never changed oil since the car was new may not be selling a car worth having. Don't laugh because I know a girl that would top off her oil whenever it was low. No changes whatsoever. When the car is 2 yrs old, she trades it in.

My cousin in the excellent rural scenic province of PEI does just this. He trades his van in after a couple of years to the new car dealership.

Usually a red Chevy Venture.

Have several friends locally with various age VW TDI's, and their usual mileage is in the very high 40's. When driven in the spring and fall, where A/C is not needed and winter fuel is not in play, all have experienced mpg in the low 50's. These are all equiped with manual trannies, the automatics will always do somewhat less.

Actually that IS the only reason I bought my car.

In this region I think that type of mentality is what gives these cars their value. People just put "biodiesel" in the title and suddenly the car is worth 2-3 times as much.

we own a 05 passat TDI. Weve been getting 50mpg, Have you taken a look at tdiclub forums people get 60mpg in the older jettas (04-below)the non PD. My passat is a PD so i cant get that kinda mileage but the non PD's can! Our city mileage is like 38-40mpg and the highway was 50mpg going at 70mph no lie!

If that's the true mileage, that's not bad, depending on the interior. Oh OK, now I see the interior pictures. Something strange on the way that page loaded.

Maybe it's different around here in the Bay Area, but I see 300SDs (126) with that kind of mileage and condition going for up to $6 and $7 K.
