!999 E300DT Climate Control Illumination

Gentlemen,

I noticed this morning on the ride in to work that the panel display was (GASP) dark!

Anyone with experience on what I hope is just a bulb change?

Thanks

Almost, but not quite. Mine was dark for a few days, so I bought the radio keys necessary to pull the unit out. Then it fixed itself. But I think it's pretty easy once you pull the control unit out of the dash.

The bulb holder is on the bottom, easily removed once the unit is out of the dash.

Buy the key or better yet, talk to your friendly MB dealership. They might lend you the key to pop it out then you can do what you need to do

Doesn't your MB dealer have them? With the shipping and all that, is it worth it unless it is a used one? Which is the auction you got it from? It should be the ones in the ebay auction below

My local dealer has them, and they want a whole lot more than that ebay posting.

I made my own in about fifteen minutes using a strip of brass and a pair of sissors.

And they won't lend it for an instant? What do they want for it?

Plaza in St. Louis wanted something like $16 for the pair. I didn't ask to borrow a pair, since I was at the parts window and not the service department. But it was clear to me that they would be simple to make.

Making them took only a bit more time than it would have to buy them on ebay, not considering shipping time.

Update on Bulb

The procedure was EXACTLY as you described, sir. Thanks again.

For those who are interested or affected, the P/N for the bulb is 002-544-02-94 and it lists for $4.84. It is a 1.2 watt 12 volt device which I suspect is interchangeable with a "286" bulb (search for "286 bulb" on Google) but I didn't have the inclination to get out the calipers and measure the old one's dimensions.

Radio removal tools with shipping and handling were under $10 from ebay.
