I went into the garage and snapped this pic:

The motor mounts are the silver saucer looking things on the left and right side of the oil pan (to further clarify; one in right side of pic has blue mark on the bottom).

The board was placed between the flat oil pan and jack. I loosened all the bolts (each mount has one top bolt and one bottom), then removed and replaced one mount at a time, which kept the engine from straying too far left or right in the engine bay.

take a look at them, if they look cracked or very dry(dry rotted) replace them.

i have a cali 1985 300D, and want to know if it is really just a 30 min job.

do i have to:
1.jack up the engine from below?
2. have enough clearance to remove and reinstall new mounts?

i was quoted $450 for engine mount replacement at a local indy and 600 at my stealership. i would rather do it myself if it is really not that hard.

the engine has to be raised up. so yes you do need to jack it up from below. as said before, make sure you use a board to distribute the weight. when using the "L" shaped allen keys on the small allen bolts you will have enough clearance. you can do like dieselcj and do one side at a time (easier, but less room to undo bolts) or you can undo both sides. you will have to line the big 8mm bolts up by moving the jack back and forth and side to side. JUST MAKE DAMN SURE THE SMALL ALLEN BOLTS HEADS ARE CLEANED OUT BEFORE TRYING TO UNDO THEM

I've seen a few invoices locally of some dealer work... I laughed at the price.

Visually mine looked fine, leveraging with using a pry bar between the crossmember and engine mount arms was inconclusive.
They appear not to be like traditional mounts where there is physical separation; here they flatten out and lose cushion.

BTW, I witnessed the same amount of engine movement shifting between R and D, with the old mounts vs. new… the difference was cushioning.

the engine movement will usually stay the same. if you have real bad vibrations check the engine shocks too.

I just ordered a new set of motor mounts for my 96 E300D-108k. They should be in next week. The car vibrates in reverse and idle a lot and I think this should fix it.
