The car is shaking( I dont think its Motor Mounts)

On the 1984 300SD, the car shakes. At high and low speeds, the car seems to have a longer idle, but i could easily be wrong. This is coming from my dad's description. I suppose it could be motor mounts, but what about tire alignment?
Thanks for all your help, ;D

the engine wont really be felt that bad at above idle speends unless there are no mounts left and the engine shocks are completley shot. that sounds like tires out of balance. an alignment will not help.

thanks. but what will :\?

kmaysob 01-23-2006 10:40 PM

having the tired balanced

After I drove it today, it seems that the idle is quite normal, it is mostly the steering wheel which tends to vibrate irregularly.

(bump)

Does it vibrate when the brakes are applied or just cruising?

erfaniman 01-24-2006 09:59 PM

cruising, mostly.

kmaysob 01-24-2006 10:45 PM

out of balance tires.

....and let me say it, too. Out of balance tires. Take it to a tire shop, should cost about $10 a tire to have them balanced (and rotated).

kmaysob 01-31-2006 11:33 PM

so did that fix it?

Brandon314159 01-31-2006 11:43 PM

Okay how about this one...

I can rotate my tires, they are nearly brand new...never locked up...and regardless I have a solid shake in my front end at 43-48mph

If I apply the brakes it gets less...so it doesn't seem to be the rotors...

Curising or accelling through this range results in a pretty good wobble of the wheel.

Steering dampner? Guide rod mounts?

kmaysob 01-31-2006 11:53 PM

almost sounds like play in wheel bearings. either loose or worn out. have you tried taking the steering damper out and checking it? (should have alot of resistance) do you feel it in your steering wheel?

Bearings are good...inspected and repacked them myself.

Steering dampner is next to check...

Could ya cue me in as to what you are thinking of?

First thing that comes to mind is probably related to transmissions or pullys ;)
