Gas Tranny into a Diesel?

Are they similar? Would it work? Bellhousings the same? I seen a M/T in a similar looking MB back home and got curious.

if near years prob will fit

but the rpm shift regulator (not correct name prob) will be wrong. i did this the other way. a 240 tranny into a 280e. it works fine but shifts at the optimal shift point for a diesel not a gasser and so hampers the acceleration some. my brother owns the car now and doesnt mind it.

now with the gasser tranny into a diesel the shift points will be too high and so if you accelerate hard it will go to the fuel cutoff before the tranny will shift, so if you do it you will need to be aware and back off when the engine starts to sound wrung out.

probably will work but will be a little of a pain to get used to. if saving money is important and you have the gasser tranny on hand i would prob sit them side by side before trying to install and be sure all the thing s line up first.

Manual 'box.

With the four speed manual, though, that souldn't be an issue. You'd just need a diesel flywheel for a manual tranny from a 240D or Euro 300D.

Starter hump in bell housing may be on the wrong side.

The shift points can be changed by swapping valve bodies, so you put a known good valve body configured for a diesel along with the modulator.

Wouldn't you keep the diesel torque-converter also for it's lower stall rpm?

Yep, torque converter is going to be set up very differently I would guess. Better make sure the one from the Diesel is in good shape if you do that and decide to keep and use it.

Swap the VB and use the torque convertor from the diesel tranny if it will fit on the flywheel.

To ask this again backwards, ... I have an opportunity to buy a trans from an '87 190E 2.6, would this be the same trans (other than valve-body and torque converter)as my '87 190DT? The price is right and I love storing things I'll probably never need.

Beware ! This pac-rat behavior can result in... well...wanna come dig thru my barn.

However, if you have the space and the price is right, might be a useful part for another forum member someday.
