Thumbs down Leaking primer pump ...

Total bummmer. I changed out my primary fuel fiter to clean the one I had on with some acetone tonite, and when I went to prime with the pump, I saw a few drops coming from underneath the primer pump.

The pump works OK but does this mean I will need to replace the primer pump assembly?

You can run them with a leaking primer.

But eventually, it will get you into trouble.

The new one is about $20. and it takes all of 15 minutes to install.

Why not do it??

Plus I think the updated design is nifty. Not having to unscrew the darn thing should be a heck of a lot easier. I'm not sure if mine is leaking but its a pain to unscrew, even when I don't tighten it that much.

A small amount of leakage from the original pump while priming is pretty hard to avoid due to the design. You are probably OK for awhile. Maybe when it gets warm and you want to throw $20 at the car a new-design pump would be nice.

When the primer pumps really get questionable is when they throw diesel at you, kinda like Linda Blair puking in the Exorcist.

Question

OK I thought I was clear on this but the pump is not leaking...and BTW it is a new design black one that doesn't unscrew....It is dripping from under the assembly....I will try to post a pic next chance I get, but the drops come from the bottom of the assembly.
If it leaks from there NOT the sides of the pump; Is it still the pump or the assembly???

Is there a copper washer under the new primer pump? I notice they don't come with one, you have to buy it separately.

Mine's been leaking like a sum***** since I've had the car (3 years). Makes a mess when doing fuel filters but in the mornings it purrs to life after one barely audible crank.

Have you tried a crush washer?

I presume that the drops are fuel. If not, there may be a leak from the IP where the fuel pump bolts in, or (in my case) some IPs have a side plate which has a neoprene gasket which can be a PITA to fit correctly and then leaks where it is not aligned.

If it is fuel, wipe down the fuel pump and pump a couple of times to see where the fuel is coming from, the outlet pipe or the primer pump where it screws into the fuel pump.
A copper or aluminum crush washer should be fitted where the primer pump fits, the outlet pipe may be leaking from the valve body? Loosen the pipe and tighten the valve body, retighten the pipe and check again.

Can someone give the Bosch part number for the primer pump off your box you put in a 300D?

I would like to try and pick one up at Napa this weekend.

Thanks
