Offset wrenches necc. for valve adjustment on 617?

Or do they just make the job easier?

Here is how to do the process. I would not even try any valve adjustment with a pair of straight wrenches.

I have plenty in stock.

If you take an extra five minutes and remove the injector lines, you most definately do NOT need them. I was worried to try the job without them but I was relieved at how easy it is. Don't bother wasting your money. I agree it would make it easier but so does removing the injector lines and that's free, not $50+.

I made mine for $8.00 plus $5.00 for the third. If you can use a torch or know someone who can, just buy the cheapest wrenches you can find and bend them. The third one I made by cutting a cheap socket and welding it to a piece of steel.

Phil,

You did exactly the same thing I did to make the three wrenches. My 2 opend end wrenches were about $2. each and the socket was an old one I had. They work as well as any $50 set I ever saw.

Removing the injector lines makes the job MUCH easier.

I must have done something wrong or got really cheap wrenches. I tried to bend seven dollar wrenches from Autozone. Broke them both even though they were red hot.

This is one of those instances where, if you've got the money, you'll save a ton of time. On the other hand, if you'd rather make your own wrenches or try to get by without the specialized tools, you can still get the job done, but it won't be quite as easy. I bought the tools a long time ago. If you are young enough and plan on adjusting valves on a 617 the rest of your life, I think it would be a good investment. (Same can be said for that expensive injector line wrench, I guess.)

just my $.02,
Wes

I can adjust all valves on a 240D all day long without the offset wrenches. On the five cylinders, however, there is a valve or two at the back of the engine that are BEAR to do with standard open end wrenches.

Have a great day,

That was what I was thinking of doing, but what is the socket for, making a line wrench? I already have metric line wrenches if that is the case... unless it also needs to be of offset design.

What size are the adjustment nuts?

The adjustment nuts are 14mm. The third wrench is for holding the valve spring retainer and is 30mm. When I get home I'll take a picture of the ones I made and post it. Some people get away with out the third wrench but I found I needed it on two valves. If you look up Hazet tools you can probably find pictures of all three.

I used the house brand @ Sears-Companion, maybe? The heads are the perfect thickness and I was able to sloooowly cold bend them without a problem. I think it was about $10 total for both. If you bend them in opposite directions it makes it easier: more options in the tight spots.

Seth,

Don't try to bend these wrenches cold. Use heat and I don't mean a propane torch. Oxy-acetylene is the only way to get the wrench hot enough to bend. I cut the unused end off my wrenches and slip a piece of stainless tubing over it to make a handle.

If you have a 5 cyl. do remove the injector lines. It makes all the difference.
