Oil cooler change?

I have searched for 2 days and not seen this mentioned So I'll ask.
I thought I had a cooler line leaking on my beloved 1981 240D...so first thing this morning I made me a "Special wrench" and started pulling the lines, after getting one off, the coffee kicked in and I realized that the rubber was NOT wet, after some head scratching I got underneath and got a good look at the fitting on the cooler...it's chewed up pretty good.

Well I'm thinking used won't be any better by the time I get it off a junker and back on. And a New one is pretty pricey and just as fragile... (I can be pretty "Ham Handed") I realize "Mods" are not a real popular way of doing things here. But is there an inherent reason why one of these won't work?

I know I may have to have hoses made or find adaptors but this is "oil feild" country...there are at least 3 or 4 places locally that will make/find anything I want, and mounting might be tricky but all I am wondering is ..."Will it do the job?"

Thanks and sorry for the long post...and staying away so long but for the last 18 months..."No problems"!!!

Bret

My .02

I would have concerns about the amount of air flow over the new cooler.

If you don't tow/race/run100 plus/ or have it turbo'd....aftermarket oil coolers fine.

Would suggest you get a used one to install though...just my 2cents worth.

PS...FYI...Have a customer with a Mercedes a/c condenser. It's used for the automatic trans' and mounted under his Vanagon....atf oil temperature never reaches 150 F..

I had a local radiator shop repair my 300D oil cooler for $40.

The inlet for the oil line tore at the tank (I tore it straightening it
after an accident).

He used something he called "Aluminum solder".
I too wanted to avoid $400 replacement MB cooler,
but wanted to keep the same mount location.

Just had it done this week.

When I wrecked mine getting the lines off, I turned to ebay, and got a brand new oil cooler for like $290 The hoses were about $120 from the dealer for the excellent OEM ones......

I know it was a lot of $$, but now I don't have to worry about it for a good long long time....

i would repair or

replace with factory new or used, too. hard to beat having a car that is stock especially when you go to sell.

be extra careful when installing to make sure you use all the factory mounting devices. also on r and r-ing the cooler lines. the coolers are very very fragile and easily fractured. be sure to use two wrenches when taking the lines off the cooler.
