Interchange?

Will the long block or short block from a 617.912 ('79 300D - natural) interchange with a 617.952 ('82 300D - turbo)? Thanks for your anticipated help.

do you want to use a non turbo block in place of a turbo block? if so then i wouldnt want to do that.. sure its already a diesel block its built better than a gasser block but then you want to turbo it.. its not engineered to be turbo'd the reason why its an N/A block

like in the mitsubishi engines.. the 4g63 and 4g63t have subtle differences that make a big dif.. both the same family of blocks but one is specifically made for turbo apps.. same can apply to the om617 family

or do you just want to put a whole turbo engine in a car that used to be a n/a engine powered car

One of my cylinder walls and pistons got messed up in my turbo motor. I was hoping to just take the shortblock off this other motor I found and put the head that I already had redone back on that short block along with the turbo and such. Thanks for your help.

It could be fit in place but there are many considerations here.

If you plan on using the turbo system on the earlier engine, get ready for some seriously shortened engine life. The differences in the block itself are negligible. It's the piston squirters and other things that were seriously beefed up when the turbo came into play.

Also, in making the change you will see an adapter plate that mounts to the rear of the engine and then mounts to the transmission. Use the plate that goes with the transmission and bolt it to the donor engine.

Good luck,

also

many of the accessories wont work between the engines, different harmonic balancer, pullies, crank nose is longer on turbo, pan is different, and on and on. i would either put in the entire na engine or find a turbo block to use.

oh and i think the ac compresssor is different and vastly different mounting points etc. so if you are going to go na better find a newer engine (if i am right about the differences).

i know they are different but not 100% sure what year they changed.
