1982 W126 617 upper oil pan question

I may get beat up for asking about this, as I have used the search feature and have not found an answer, does the engine have to be removed from the car to gain access and remove the upper oil pan? My guess would be that it has to be. I have the CD manual and have not come accross any section that talks about this yet.

I apoligize if this has been covered already.

The FSM calls for lifting the engine while it remains in the vehicle to gain sufficient clearace to pull the upper pan past the connecting rods. It does not need to be fully removed.

I like your answer

That is interesting to learn. Is your FSM in paper form or CD? If CD, what section did you find it in?

What is sufficient clearance? I would assume the engine would need to be separated from the engine mounts? Would you use an engine hoist to accomplish this task? I would think you could not jack up the engine from below, as there would be know where to provide for clearance while you pull the upper engine pan, unless you jack from the transmission.

I would think that pulling it would be easier (and safer) than trying to do it "sort of" in the car. I know the FSM talks about lifting the engine, not sure if this includes the 126.120 chassis. I'm game for almost anything, but I wouldn't want to try that one. Just imagine trying to chip away at that original block/pan sealant on your back below a hanging engine. I'd rather have a hernia operation!

This is the hard copy. It's in section 01-310.

Can't advise you of the details as I've never done it. The manual shows an engine hoist from above.

I'll defer to Pete since he's had the engine completely out of the SD.

i havent done it either

but there are folks here that have. maybe one will chime in that has done the pan without taking the motor out.

my guess is either way is about as much of a pain.

the plus in not removing it is all the lines and linkages which will have to be removed and replaced. good chance of damaging some and needing additional parts.
