Nope it'd run off it fine so long as it wasn't arctic temps outside, and yes, the exhaust would be a *bit* smoky......

If your tank screen was slightly blocked, the blockages could allow air to be sucked from the top of the in-tank screen, while the bottom of the screen were still under the fuel.

As has been said already, when the tank is low, pull the fuel pipe from the tank screen and dump any fuel into a bucket (or 2), then remove the screen and clean it.

Tony;
The air coming in from the top of the in tank screen is the best explanation I've heard for getting poor engine performance when I've been low on "fuel".
cool.

Yo - Got the Benz:

Here’s what I can tell you about burning WVO in a 1980 300D with the original “never been into it” 280K motor:
First off - I don’t have any conversions done to the car. The M/B 300 and it’s pump are some of the most robust diesel systems out there. (Not like I needed to tell you folks that.)

1. The “Veggie Blend” I get from two different restaurants runs me about .03 per gallon per 50 gallons made when I figure in the gas burned in my truck to go get it.
2. I have about 120.00 invested in my filtering system that the wife more commonly refers to as “The Still”.
3. The 120.00 investment paid for itself with the first 2 to 3 tank fills back when diesel was running 3.40 here last year. The car hasn’t seen a fuel pump in over a year now. Once ya go Veggie - Ya never go back.
4. I used to run about 315 miles on pump diesel in the car before the fuel light came on just running around town and such. Now, on WVO, I can run about 430. Yep. No lie. Don’t understand it. But don’t complain either. Guess’n it has to do with WVO’s higher cetane rating. Also about 60% better lubricating quality over diesel fuel.
5. Engine runs quieter on the WVO than it ever did on diesel. Starts better in the summer. Runs smoother when the engine is cold. Nowhere near the knocks. In the winter here (N-TX), I cut the fuel to a 70/30 (WVO/diesel) mix. Starts about the same as it ever did on diesel in the winter. I do have a block heater I plug in about an hour or so before starting on mornings when its been in the 30s here.
6. I haven’t seen any more (any, for that matter) smoke from the WVO burn as compared to diesel. And, it sure smells better. LOTS BETTER. LOTS BETTER FOR THE TREES TOO.
7. I’ve always run a can of Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge through the injectors about every 6 months or so regardless of the fuel used. I’ve never seen (felt or heard) an injector issue in the year plus I’ve done the WVO thing.
8. On the highway, it’s awesome. That’s where the mileage is made. Can run 75mph with the cruise on from Ft. Worth to San Antonio on far less than half a tank. Might not be the greatest for a diesel motor, but it used to take darn near ¾ a tank.
9. Did I mention it’s cost’n me about 3 cents per gallon?
10. Did I mention the trees?

WVO2GO;
Curious what is your blend. Is it just WVO/Diesel or anything else???
