I hate thieves

Last night I was at my local Fleet Farm (like a way cooler Home Depot with dairy farm supplies too) getting supplies for my upcoming project. I had my "new" 81 300TD in the parking lot with the doors unlocked. I don't really have a choice because they don't work. (Not vacuum locks, all manual, but the posts don't move.) Not a huge rush to fix it because I live in a town in Wisconsin with a population under 50,000. I had an extra battery on the floor or the front passenger side because it was my new ride and I didn't know how it would handle the cold and wanted some extra insurance. Well, I come back to the car with my new bought goodies and get in. Huh, I didn't leave the moonroof open? Look at the floor, aww man, they took my battery. They left my haynes manual and my jumpers, but stole that $75 battery that I just got 2 monthes ago. Well, I knew I shouldn't have bothered but I called the cops. Waited and waited, and finally went back into the store to see what time it was because the clock in my car doesn't work and I don't have a cell phone. Well, it had been over 2 hours since I called. I called the non-emergency number back and they said they were still coming and hadn't forgotten. I told them they could come to my house because I wasn't waiting anymore. No, they won't come because I am outside of the city limits. I do have the option of going down to the station today and wasting more of my time to file a report. Is it worth my time? I don't know, because I know I will never get my battery back. I just feel this civic duty to report it so it shows up in crime statistics.

Anyway, thanks for the space to vent. (Should have probably went to open discussion, but I wanted my diesel friends to be sure to see it.)

Glenn

I feel your pain and I know exactly the feeling.

Some *******s broke into my house and took some change, some liquor, and the digital camera but not much else. A bunch of kids......presumably.

So, I head over to the police station and figure I'll also do my civic duty and report the crime.

Desk officer says "What.......they broke into your house.......like a burglary??"

"Yes........like a burglary"..........

"Well, you can't report that here. You have to dial 911 and have the officers come out to your house."

"Why can't I simply report it here?"

"Because that's a major crime and the detectives will have to investigate."

I've got prior experience on how this police department investigates crimes. Basically, file the report and leave it unsolved.

So, the hell with it.......just went home.........and forgot about it. Nothing comes of it anyway and I'm certainly not going to report it to the insurance company........deductible wouldn't even be made.

The thing is if this person is ever caught. And he has in his possession some things like digital cameras, extra batteries, etc... the authorities can charge him for more than just one robbery.

I know it's still a PITA.

Call them back and tell them that they don't need to come out to your house because you found the thieves and shot them. Then hang up. You'll find out just how good their response time is.

I'm convinced that this county is the ideal place to commit a serious crime. If they manage to catch you.......and you don't confess........they can't get a conviction here. Their entire MO is to get confessions.........otherwise they are sunk.

Yes, but on CSI last night, they managed to catch a murderer by reading a bar code on an airplane ticket that the purp was holding in his hand when his picture was taken by a security camera 300 feet away! Wow those Las Vegas cops are amazing!!!

shoot'em huh?

maybe the adrial white story has made it to your area. here is a guy who shoots at three guys trying to remove his stereo from his saturn. he gets shoots one thru the jaw and wounds two others(not bad shooting actually). two others drag him to the car(moms voyager). the thieves go to one hospital only to find that the emer has been closed three months(guess they don't read the paper either) then get to the next hosp. the one shot in the jaw dies and is described as a 19 yr old who returned tro town trying to get his life back in order. lady i work with said they went to high school together and he was really nice.

you guessed it. the shooter because he is accurate is held in jail. at a community meeting over this event the police chief says in response to the question,....' i cannot disclose the location of the other three survivors, for their saftey'.

defend your property, go to jail. welcome to wisconsin.

You Are Lucky!

a few years ago, a friend of mine parked his BMW in front of a Seven 11 in Oakland. He was in there for less than 10 minutes. When he came out, his car was on blocks - his 4 brand new wheels costing over $1000 were gone . He did not even bother calling the cops, as they have too much other serious things to deal with, and he did not want to stay around the neighborhood where there are groups of young men hanging around doing nothing.

did my civic duty

I filed my report. Not very responsive today either. I called dispatch first and asked to have an officer meet me at the police station in 10 minutes because I have worked this routine before and thought I could save some time. Nope, you gotta come down and then when you get here we will call for an officer. Got there, they called. Waited half an hour and the receptionist was shocked to see me still sitting in the hall when he came out of the office to use the restroom. They called for an officer again and after 45 minutes of total waiting he finally arrive. He was very curt, and gave the definate arrogance that I was wasting his time. He also had problems finding my call records because they had closed the case last night. Well, it wasn't solved and he asked a few questions. Then flat out tells me that they will probably never find it. Well, duh, I know that. Atleast give me some sort of hope or gratification for wasting so much time while reporting it. I got none. Now I get to stay late at work today to make up for my extended lunch. (Notice I didn't say "work late", but rather just "stay late at work" )

I could right a letter about the horrible service of the police, but I think I have made enough complaints, for a while, that will fall on deaf ears.

Once again, thanks for the space to vent.

I think if an officer was "curt" with me I would have let him have it. Is it too much to ask for him to do his job?
Beside what better does he have to do anyway? Sit at a speed trap or drag him away from the donut shop?
"They will probably never find it"
Good job...keep up the good work.

To all owners of Mercedes always remember to lock your car. A knowlegable thief can made off hundreds of $$ of parts in your car in less than 10 minutes. The CCU, wood, switches, and the instrument cluster can be removed in that short time. Of course if a professional thief wants your car, that's hard to prevent - they could just jump or tow your car away. That's why you see so many brand new cars disappeared even though they have the latest theft prevention devices.
