I always use Amsoil 15w-40. Never a problem getting it and the 10k oil changes are great.

I buy the kit for about $15.00 from Snider Petroleum, Sumner, WA. Soot has been consistant at .7% for the 603 at 5K. The 617 will be higher. I have not tested it since the tests confirmed the coolant leak. It gets it's first change very soon........but I won't be testing it because of the presence of coolant from prior to the head replacement. I'll probably go 6K with it just to see what it does. Remember, it has the Rotella which is not quite as good as the M1. |

Has anyone ever flushed their engine with ATF? I heard it worked pretty good at cleaning up the internals.

I do 2,500 mile Rotella Dino changes on both cars now, since they get a lot of city miles. We buy 6 gallons in a case at a time from Sams Club for like $24 or something, haven't had to buy any in a long time, since the 83 has been asleep for 2.5 months and it takes me a while to get those 2,500 miles completed usually....only 422 miles to go though, I did 850 miles in the past 2 weeks! I also send in the oil for analysis. My next change is at 234,190 miles. I am currently at 233,768.......
The 83 has been at 265,667 for a looong while now, we need to get it insured and back on the road! I do move it around from time to time in our driveway and such though.....

Funny this thread came up because I just got home from Walmart looking for a spare quart of 5W-40 and they were out here as well. There wasn't even a tag for the five gallon jugs. I don't mind using Rotella T and changing it more often but I'd really prefer the synthetic. I've still got one Walmart and two part houses to check before I go into a mild panic. When one store has been out, I've always been able to find it somewhere else. $20 for the five quart jug is hard to let go.

If you insist on doing this type of flush, here is a guide: Kerosene engine flush...Step by step... 1. Drain oil except two quarts, or you can drain all the oil and add two quarts of new oil. (starting with a NEW oil filter is recomended). 2. Add the remainder as kerosene. 3. Start the engine. *DO NOT REV THE ENGINE* 4. let it run until warm, not HOT, just warm. About 5-10 mins. 5. Drain the entire contents. 6. You can pour Kerosene into the NON-running engine as it drains out untill it comes out clear. 7. Pour about one quart of oil and let it run out of the oil pan. 8. Add your favorite oil/oil filter.(replace oil pan plug... 9. Run engine until its at operating tempature. Check to make sure it is running ok. 10. Optional...You can drain the system one last time and add new oil filter and oil... I would never in my life do this to my car. To each his own... |

Thats a valid point, running the engine with that stuff in it could be the end of the engine, especially on one that burns oil regularly!!

No you bought Mobil Delvac 1300. It is a very good dino oil but not synthetic. Walmart better still carry those 5 quart jugs, at $4 a quart the price was great! If I have to pay retail of $5.50 per quart I may try and hunt down an Amsoil dealer. However Amsoil salesmen and some supporters annoy me to no end so I will probably stick to Mobil 1 regardless.
