Rare electric speedo on 81 300TDT?

We have an 81 300TDT w/ an electric speedo, how rare is that? Just thought I'd ask.

I think all 1981 300TD Turbodiesels have electronic speedometers.

My '85 has a cable, so you might tap the brake there.....

My 82' had a mechanical speedo.

Are you sure that you are not mistaking the cruise control pickup for the speedo connestion?

I'm pretty sure the standard speedo cable (that is like the one in my sedan) is not in the wagon anywhere behind the cluster. All plugs are in and it's not missing, speedo is accurate too measured via speed traps w/ indicators of how fast you're going (here in South CA)

The speedo plug has a screw on cover and when you remove it will have 3 prongs with ridges on their outer surface (for gripping). Pull it out and it will have a single tab on the right side (facing the cluster from the driver seat). If you peel back the wiring, it's soft not like a speedo cable which is hard.

Joe, where did you read this? This is Karugs btw

It was a one year thing. After that, they went to the cables, why they pulled the "switcheroo", I don't know. I don't know why they have speedometer cables for the 1981 300TDT listed on FastLane, it's an error I guess.

Well no it's not that, in fact it doesn't look at all like a speedo.

Jason, thanks I'll let you know if we need one. The sedan is not calibrated properly and is 10mph optimistic so I'll change that when I have sorted out other more important things. It's consistent all the way to 115mph (which will read 125).

If I go and take it out to swap the cluster housing (got a better one but with mech speedo) I might take pics. However I agree with HTown, I wish I had the electric speedo. That way there's one less thing to go wrong.
