Preparing for a long trip.

I'm going to a wedding about 1500 miles away from where i'm at. my dad did a similar trip in (what is now) my 84 300SD just before he gave it to me. the reason he gave it to me was that it broke down on him while he was tooling around at the wedding and then had to repair the car before he could drive it back the 1500 or so miles.

so, what should i be inspecting and what should be replaced before the trip. i have a new tranny filter and seal from the dealer... and i'm planing on changing the oil. and fuel filters. any other suggestions.

i've only had the car leave me stranded twice in the 4 years i've owned it and that was because of bad alternators both times. but i had the alternator changed by a local shop this last time and so i'm hoping that they solved the problems. so far so good.

About the only other thing that you might want to check/change are the belts. Sometimes they look fine from the top but are loaded with cracks.........just waiting for you to take a road trip.

The water pump is always an item that can go at any time.........but........they usually provide ample warning with a slow leak........at first.

I always carry a couple (of each) extra fuel filters as you can always get some bad fuel. dont forget to have a wrench to fit the big "spin on" nut. I also carry a qt of CLEAN fuel to fill the filter. Dont forget to throw a few rubber gloves in the trunk.

All the fluids can get attention, make sure your rad hoses are in top shape. And carry spare filters, tools, paper towels and nitrile gloves.

if you don't have spare exhaust rubber 'donuts' carry a couple of regular wire coat hangers along in case you need an emergency jury rig..

oh, and a glow plug relay fuse.
