Noticeable drop in fuel economy

I have noticed that my fuel economy has dropped pretty significantly on my 1982 300sd. I used to get about 400 miles per tank. Now I only get about 350. I used to get 25mpg in town and 28 highway. Now I get 23-25mpg per tankfull.

Everything is running great. I recently changed both fuel filters. There is no loss in power or rough idle. In fact since the new motor mounts, it idles with absolutely no shaking at all.

I did notice a slight loping when it is cold and not using the block heater this time of year. It has never done that before.

Can injector wear affect fuel economy significantly?

My tires are down to the wear bars and need to be replaced. As soon as my rims get back from the body shop I'm putting on new tires. But I woud not think that's an issue. Let me know if anyone has ideas.

A severely restricted air intake system on a diesel will give this result. It will seem to run fine but will use a lot more fuel than normal. You might check the air filter and make sure there is no obstruction anywhere.

Good luck,

maybe the diesel

Well, I just checked the air filter the other day and it had very little oil or debris I could see. I took the air compressor hose and blew it out. Maybe it is the winter diesel.

I have not seen any fuel leaks. I have never checked that strainer in the tank, but if that was it, I would not have adequate fuel supply and loss of power or likewise.

Sounds like the air filter may be worth changing. How often do you change yours?

I am going to replace all the injectors when they finally make it home from Colorado. Can't wait to see what that does. I figure with 271k it might be time to service them.
