If your going to buy a car from california, stay away from the 85 models. Trust me.

Now as far as a pink slip goes... Personally I wouldn't buy a car with just a pink slip. As far as I'm concerned I'm going to need a car with a title.

In California, the "pink slip" means the title of the vehicle. The title has a pinkish color and that's why they call it that way. When you buy a vehicle, the owner will transfer the vehicle to you by filling in the bottom of the title it will include the name and address of the person it is sold to, the date sold, and milage. The seller will then signed it. With it you can go and get a new title.

Correction: it used to be pink, its now a rainbow color, for security reasons I guess. And it does have a box for owner and lien holder, with places to sign each off for release.

Thanks to all, talked to my brother in law, who lives in La La land. He added 3 signatures required from the seller. or else it cannot change title.

In Canada u need to do Lien search. Otherwise you cannot figure out if any monies owing on the car. Some seller deliberately take the car to another Province to sell and pocket all the monies.

Easy To Import Car From US

As a matter of interest, is it easy to import a used vehicle from the US? What are the procedures? I know it is problem to do it the other way round especially if it does not conform to the US standard. At one time I was interested in getting a 300TD from BC, but was put off by the restrictions etc.

Don't be put off by a later CA car. I've run my '85 for the last 15 years and 120K miles without incident. The key is to make sure the emission stuff is up to date (specifically has the trap catalyst retrofit) and then just leave it alone. With all due respect to ConnClark 9 out of 10 of the people who complain about the '84-'85 CA cars have tried to monkey with the emissions systems, or the PO did. They're much more complicated than you think and I'm not sure anyone this side of Stutgart really understands how the whole system works so "improvements" tend to just create a lot of problems. A rust free '85 is a great car to own.

I second lrgs' statement. I have over 265000 on my '85. With regards to the pink slip, make sure the name of the guy who is selling you the car and the name in the title is the same. Ask him for an ID. It will say in the pink slip if there are any lienholders. Review the pink slip carefully. Some people just leave the pink slip in the glove box if you get what i mean.

Yes, but a less complicated 1983 model without rust is even better, IMHO.
