Engine Identification

Ok, I couldn't find this anywhere, so I figured I'd ask.

My car is a 1984 300D Euro. When I purchased it, it had an aftermarket turbocharger installed on it (I belive it's a KKK).. since I'm fairly certain the Euro's didnt have Turbos on them, for that year.

I'm just curious if the engine was replaced.. my last 300D was a 617.952.
This car, is 617.011

Is that a US model engine? Or am I reading the wrong part #? Thanks!

You sure that the engine designation is 617.011?

There is a 617.910 engine and a 617.912 engine. The former is a n/a engine in the W115 body. The latter is the n/a engine in the W123 body.

Hmm..
This is what the engine says on the long side, towards the IP. 617 011 (some other numbers, I forget)

Probably looking in the wrong place. I'll look at the other spots tomorrow, maybe I'm reading the wrong part number.. either that, or the engine is just dirty from road grime.

Sometimes it is easier to take a rubbing of the engine number using a dull pencil and a piece of paper.

I suspect that is the number for the head, not the engine. It does not make any sense as an engine number.

does the engine have the ribbed aluminum upper pan? does it have single or double alternator belts? these are two easily spotted differences in the na 300 and the factory turbo engines.

the factory turbo motor will have the ribbed upper oil pan and double alternator belts. it will also have an expansion tank with the radiator cap on it. the na engine equipped car will have the rad cap on the rad like a 240.

I found my engine number (617 912) just below the #5 glow plug, behind the oil filter housing.

It appears that someone put a turbo on a normally aspirated engine...
That means that they may or may not have changed out to the oil cooled pistons, etc..
So if it has lasted any reasonable time then they probably did not have the pressure valve turned up much on the turbo....and I would suggest leaving it that way since the normally aspirated engine is designed to work at lower temperatures and bearing pressures than the turbo blocks.
