Trans fluid drips on bottom of bellhousing?

The bottom of my bellhousing has some red (transmission fluid) drips (also on garage floor). The only source of the leak I can think of is the transmission front shaft seal. Anything else come to mind?

As far as I know this seal can be simply pulled and a new one installed once the trans is out, correct.

Thanks,
John (1986 190D - Automatic)

You may want to check the converter drain plug. Its not likely but worth a look.

Good idea, I checked that; no leak there.

Any other ideas?

Only things that come to mind require pulling the tranny. I'm trying to pull mine now.

I replaced the front shaft seal in a Chrysler automatic a few years ago that had a similar leak, I just want to make sure there is nothing else hidden when I remove the MB trans that could be a likely source. Is there anything else on the engine side of the trans besides the front shaft seal?

Here is a pic taken this morning:

Mine was leaking a lot from that seal. I pulled it and replaced the seal and it still is leaking from somewhere.

At least on the W126 they are pretty easy trans to pull. If you can get acess to a lift you can do it in a couple of hours.

If the seal is leaking, it's probably because the front pump bushing is beat. Also, it could be a bad gasket between the pump and case. IMHO, it makes sense to change those too since you already have the trans out. Oh, and swap out the B3 friction plates if you have a long reverse engagement delay. BTW, it's pretty easy.

There is a oring seal around the pump that seals it to the case .That was leaking on my 300 SDL when I bought it .The oring was hard as a rock when removed.

The front pump o- ring is the number one cause of a bell housing leak with the engine not running.
