w123 trunk-argh!
Hello all,
I'd been longing for a older benz diesel for close to a year. Now, I was finally in a position to buy. I then found a 300d & 300sd. I'm a musician so I went ahead and brought my mesa 4x12 guitar cabinet- which fits in the trunk of a 1994 c280. Much to my frustration, it fits in neither of the 300d or 300sd trunks. It seems as though its not so much the size of the trunk, but the opening. Without lugging the cab around to find a fit, does anyone know of a larger trunk opening(newer or older benz) that might work. 190d, or newer 300? I know this is not really diesel specific but, this forum has always been extremely resourceful. thanks, Michael D |
get a w123 wagon.. its worth it

I have a C280 myself, and I will say that the trunk on that car can pack a whole lot more than a w123, it seems to be its shape that lends itself to this. The W123 trunk is large enough, however it is very shallow in comparison to the W202. The W202 is deeper, which makes it better for carrying larger items that wouldnt normally fit an a more shallow trunk.
Look for a W123 wagon, or even a W124 wagon. Both will be hard to find esp. in perfect shape, but nice ones pop up from time to time. Expect to pay more for a diesel wagon than for a diesel sedan. Keep hunting! & Good luck! the extra $ for a diesel wagon is money well spent! |
Get rid of the 4x12 mesa cab and get the soundman to mic a smaller one. Don't most venues you play have a decent PA?
Make it easy on yourself, your back, ears... Stage volume is way too loud anyways. Now you need 400+ watts into the monitor to hear your vocals over the 4x12. Then there's the drummer... Ain't nothin' wrong with the trunk size. ;) |
Sounds like a wagon is the car for you. You would have 4-5 times the space of a trunk with the back seats down in a wagon. You could probably get all the drummer's gear in there with your cabinet.

I'd just find a good w123 wagon with a working SLS. You could haul mountains of gear with one of those and the rear wouldn't sink down. w124 wagons, at least the '87s are usually what people call money pits that have lots of deferred maintenance issues. I have never seen an E-Class diesel wagon other than the '87 and then the w210. Maybe there were 2.5 turbo wagons but I don't think I've ever seen one. The w123 would be what I'd be looking out for but really good examples are rare and comparatively expensive.

Alright then. Wagon it is. Finding a wagon was actually my first inclination, however, they are hard to find and demand a premium. At some of the prices I've seen, I might as well buy a Jetta wagon :fork_off: . Pardon my blaspheme.
Also, why bother with the pignose. I thought I'd just leave the amp and cab at home and tell everyone to be real quiet :silly: Lesters are plenty resonant. Thanks for the advice. -michael d |
A 108 has a large trunk...but I'm thinking you have something above 15mpg in mind :D
