95 e300d fuel door kaput
I went to put fuel in the car this morning on my way to work. Fuel door would not open. I could hear the mechanism clicking but wouldn't unlock. The owners manual pointed to a manual release in the truck (right rear). I looked and looked but couldn't find it. There are two metal boxes in the same area, I think that one of them is an amp for the radio. Maybe the release was hidden behind those? After a while I gave up, it was cold outside and I needed to get to work.
Since the E300D was on empty, I went home to get my other car and the battery was dead! So I ended up driving the wife's car. One of those days I tell ya! From searching the forums it looks like the vacuum element goes bad occassionally. Guess it was good that I was close to home. Are these vacuum elements difficult to remove and replace? Other than this problem the car is doing well. I'm now up to 163K miles. I put new tires on the car in January. In December I replaced the motor mounts, belt and belt tensioner. My hope is to reach 200K. But to get there I need to be able to fill up the fuel tank.... Chuck |

I have the same car, but that never happened to me. try to use a credit card to open it just like a door on a house. about reaching 200,000 miles should be easy.

This morning I unlocked the car...and sure enough the fuel door opened as well.
